Let me tell you what not to do;
do not buy cheap furniture from
Ikea
Walmart
etc, because buy the time you find that it is NOT good furniture and is really CHEAP not only in price, but also in quality, you will end up replacing it and ultimately could have purchased something more durable, possibly stylish and with more quality.
Target is a great place to start and has some actual noted designers for alot of their furniture and accessories. Other places like Pennys, Linens & Things and Sears now carry Interior Decorators lines of bedding, furniture etc. And KMART has been carrying Martha Stewart for years now. These are all good starts for economical and quality items.
I believe starting with a color and or theme to all rooms is essential in the decorating process; you have to have some idea of where you going. Once you get that color or theme in your head, you start to browse stores or the net regarding that concept to see what is out there and get ideas from rooms already done, floor room set ups etc.
More than anything, I think a home should reflect who you are; your persona, lifestyle, favortie things, hobbies, and work even. If someone comes in my home they know by the decor that I like Asian appeal, art work of all kinds, I collect, there are earth tones in one room, vibrant oranges in another, hot pink in my daughters room, etc.
Smell is apart of decor too, so when you walk in my home and smell pier1 candles it is distinctive to my taste.
There are so many angles you can approach design, just clear your head, write some things down, to start even copy somthing you have seen on tv or in a book and just have fun with it!!!!!!!!!!

Use beautiful things and colors you love. You can always change locations of items. Play and have fun.
