I bathe him at least once a week and his ears still smell of pure rot. I wash his ears as best as i can, and yet the smell is always there. Any tips?

If regular store-bought ear cleaners are not working, please go to your vet, it sounds like your poor puppy had an ear infection

Ps - when bathing him, try not to let too much water go into his ears!!!! That is a big cause of infection.

Take him or her to the vet. Is there a black discharge in his ears? Dogs who are allergic to their food can have a black, foul smelling discharge from their ears which is indicative of a yeast infection. Weekly baths are far too much! Dogs have natural oils on their skin and by bathing too often you will create skin problems. Make sure you use dog shampoo (not human or baby shampoo) bc the shampoo should have no alcohol at all. That smell is probably due to infection. If so, your Vet will recommend a special ear wash and also antibiotics. Step one: See the Vet. And make sure you ask her/him about how often you should be bathing your pet. If that is a yeast infection, you will have to start thinking about trying different foods. Anyway - start with a Vet. Good luck. This may take a while; so be patient!

Our Dachshund gets infections once in a while and the vet says that bad smell is a sure indication there's one present. You should take your pup to the vet to have it looked at, properly diagnosed and get the needed treatment. Sadly, keeping them clean isn't enuf to keep an infection at bay.

With our dog, he has the long ears, which are notorious for infections. Our vet suggests when we give him his bath, that we place a cotten ball just inside the ear. Not too deep mind you, but just enuf to hold it in place. This will prevent water from getting in during bathing, which is very often the cause of an ear infection for Dachshund.

I hope this helps and that your puppy will feel better in a few days with some meds. Ear infections are really painful for dogs and in our case, hard to get rid of.

You need to get your puppy to the vet, because it sounds like he might have ear mites or an ear infection. Both can cause a horrible smell in the ears. If you're washing your puppy once a week and cleaning out his ears, that could cause an ear infection. Ear wax is a good thing. It protects the inner ear from dust and other small particles. If you're constantly cleaning it out, you're opening up the ear to damage.

Also, unless you have a therapy dog that has to be washed before trips, hold down the bathing to once a month. You're going to cause your puppy's skin to start overproducing oil and get a really stinky puppy! Dogs have a natural oil on their skin and fur to protect it. Washing them completely strips that oil and their body quickly works to produce more. If their body gets used to having to constantly produce more oil, you're going to end up with skin problems because of that.

Best of luck and head to a vet quickly. I'd almost be willing to bet on the ear mites or infection.

Is it possible that when you are washing his ears you are not drying them very well? That could have possibly caused a bacterial or yeast infection in his ears, of which can be very painful. Go to your vet and have him check your puppies ears. He will be able to give you some flushing solution that will keep the ear canal clean and probably give you an antibiotic to heal the infection. Keep an eye on this though, it can really affect your puppy and cause a hearing loss.

dog's ear don't smell for no reason, you need to get it checked out by a vet. He could have ear mites, or an infection and it's easy to fix. He will give you meds to put in the ears once or twice a day, and in a week or so....no smell and healthy ears.
Cats also get this too.

The problem is that you washed the dog's ears. NEVER get water into a dog's ears. A dog's ear canal goes straight down not sideways like ours and once water is in there it takes a vet to remove it.

You have given your dog an ear infection and the poor thing is probably suffering horribly. I hope the same happens to you.

Get your dog some help.

Take him to the vet for a check up. He probably has an ear infection. My Golden Retreiver used to get them. He seemed to feel fine but he had dark gunk deep in his ear canal and I couldn't get rid of it. The vet prescribed an ear wash and an antibiotic that you placed in the ear. It cleared it up in no time and no more stinky ears!!

Your puppy could have an ear infection take him to the vet.

They can provide you with a cleaner to use . AND ANTIBIOTIC drops if the dogs ears are infected. If its not an infection I use 1 part vinegar to 3 parts warm water and Clean out my dog ears she is prone to ear infections.

Keep your dogs ears dry.

Take him to the vet. My dog had a stinky ear and ended up having a yeast infection in her ear. When you bathe your dog, do not get dirty water in his ears that's how they get infections.
