The commonest name for British pubs was once thought to be the Red Lion (Americans note that it is not a chain like McDonalds) but someone has disputed the claim it is the Red Lion and is now reckoned to be some other name, but I have forgotten which one it is.
In my part of Sussex, the King's Head is probably the commonest pub name, possibly followed by The Albion.
Lots of other common names; coming straight off the top of my head: Duke of Wellington, Crown & Anchor, Schooner (maybe just in ports?), Crabtree (lots of apple trees), Ship, Three Horseshoes, George (or George & Dragon, Royal George), Royal Oak (don't know of one personally, but Charles II hid up an Oak Tree when he was a renegade), Battle of Trafalgar, Rising Sun, Evening Star.
Lots of silly names are now appearing. Some pubs will be known by different names from what is written on the sign. Owners cannot just change the name of the pub and expect locals to start called it by the new name.
