I'm British, but have been asked to give a best man's speech at a French wedding. What form should the speech take (bearing in mind that half the guests will be British)?

I'm a French-Canadian living in the United States (Rochester, NY) and I actually had to do the same thing, here is what I did, because my audience was proeminently English-speaking but with about half the audience speaking French I addressed the people in English with some french translations (for important events) in very short sentences, I placed "french expressions" throughout the english version, some key comments (such as "Thank You" or "Welcome" I said in both languages. It worked well for me. You basically want everyone to NOT feel left out, so by moving back and forth between languages everyone can "understand" the meaning of the address and also feel that you are speaking to both cultures. It also depends on how well you master the other language, and my last piece of advice would be to stay away from "jokes" in the second language unless you are SURE you are saying it right or that it will be received as being funny, sometimes one simple word can change the meaning of the joke or not be so funny or be misconstrued. I think that just by showing that "you speak" both languages and that you address the crowd in both languages will prove that you have respect for both cultures.

My father's side of the family are Armenian and one of my cousins, a long time ago, got married to an Italian girl. The best man (my cousin's brother) gave his best man's speech in English, Armenian and in Italian...he said it wasn't too difficult because he only had to learn the Italian for his speech, not like learning the entire language. Just have someone who is fluent in French translate your speech and learn how to pronounce everything. It will show that you care.

Probably now not. The trouble comes from deciding upon the extent of schooling that the loads will have to have earlier than they admire simply how unhealthy Right-wing politics fairly are, and what sort of they get to permit them to keep contributing to a sophisticated society.
