I actually work for a cyber school, Connections Academy. Basically what it is we're a hybrid of public school and home school. We offer a public school teacher, available to the family by phone or e-mail, we provide books and in some places a computer. Our students do their lessons at home with the assistance of a parent or other adult acting as a Learning Coach.

Our program is not just for kids who have had problems in school, we have students ranging from Special Ed to Gifted and Talented. We have kids who were being home-schooled and whose parents wanted more structure, we have kids whose parents weren't satisfied with the quality of education their local school provided. We have students with health problems who need flexibility for when they do their lessons and we have professional kids, athletes, actors and the like, who also need flexibility.

Basically, in my opinion, cyber schools like Connections Academy are an option for any parent who is willing to be extensively involved in their child and want to make sure they get the best education available.

Yes Phoenix online is an example, Brigadoon is another here in Ohio. It is a set of courses for students to do from a computer and not have to go to classroom settings. Generally kids who have been in trouble in school are able to continue their education. They general need to spend 3 hours a day on their lessons. (I wish we had that when I was in school)
