Does anyone own one of either of these and could comment on it? I have always loved the MGF but I'm wondering if its practical as the other car in our household is also a sporty number but we don't have any kids/dogs etc so we don't really need a family car. But on the other hand, the new style beetle has really caught my eye and I just can't decide!

From a practical point of view... The MGF is no longer manufactured after MG Rover went into Liquidation a couple of years back and the 'tooling' was sold to a Chinese company... Whereas, the VW Beetle is going to be around for some time, as is VW and you'll get parts service etc... From an aesthetic point of view.. the MGF

Ok...
to the person saying 'you obviosly know nothing about cars, the fact that you are considering buying an MG proves that.' he's talking from his behind, and clearly knows nothing about cars himself!
I think the cars are in different catagories really, both very hairdressery, but it depends what you are after.
The Mg is a very fun car, good handling, quick (especially the vvc), looks great, its got heritage, affordable and Mg owners always have a smile :-)
I don't know so much about the Vw, but I know they are very overpriced for what they are.
The Mgf uses the K series engine, to the people saying its a heap of crap, they're talking crap, it's a great engine, and is reliable, the only problem being the cooling of the engine. As long as the engine is well maintained you shouldn't have any trouble, with regular coolant checks, and dont rag it when the engine is cold! Once it's warmed up (cumon, it will only take 2mins) you can rev it all to the redline without thinking twice, the engine is very good, it's used in the lotus elise and the caterum 7 to name a couple!
I would say Mgf, but you shoudn't narrow yourself to 2 cars. Consider the mazda mx5, very reliable and stylish, just a little common!

I'd steer clear of the MGF. MG Rover went bust, so servicing and spares could be difficult in future. Also, reliability worries. Some Rover engines are susceptible to head gasket failure, due to small coollant resevoir, so a small loss of coollant could mean costly bills.

The VW beetle make a better ownership proposition, but it's image is that of a hairdressers car, if you know what I mean.

Have you considered the new MINI? It's as trendy as the beetle once was, and the handling is superb. Build quality up to BMW standards, but not cheap.

Well the MGF is a nice car to drive as I had one in '98 but the unfortunate thing about Rover going bust is that up to now no one has the production rights for the spares. The shanghai Motor Company have the blueprints but have not put them into a production phase. Some spurious parts can be found but they may void any warranty on the car if you have to later service it and may be of inferior quality. The Beetle on the other hand is made by VW and we did beat the Germans in the war so its a tough one to call.

we've had an MGF for several years now and it's just had some major engine work done on it that cost hundreds. However, it has been a very reliable car and I think the only reason we've had to do this work is because of the way my hubby drives the car.

I think what you might need to consider though, is WV are still manufacturing the Beetle, but MG have gone out of production.

The MGF had an 1800cc petrol engine in it the same as a landrover freelander, these engines suffered from overheating and terrible cylinder head/gasket trouble, basically they are crap! Stick to the VW they use the same running gear as the golf and are streets ahead of the MGF,hope this helps.

Definately the beetle, the mgf although sporty has really poor rear vision, its cramped and costs a lot for what you actually get.

Take note that there is a lot of people on here asking about problems with VWs and none that i'v seen asking abot MGs! we live in a self-hate nation who hate to see british products do well. I'v never had a problem getting MG Rover parts for customers, and i find them a lot easyer/cheaper to work on.
Up to you but if you want something that will shift, handle and look good go for the MG. If you want a car that looks the same if you drove it backwards, go for the ugly bug......Dont follow the crowed, get what you want!
