All works of art have messages in them, some more apparent than others and unfortunately we are all to often left trying to interpret them long after the artist has died. When we try to interpret them we have to take the social, political, and religious climate of the times the artist lived in. Some points of view had dire consequences in Da Vinci's time so artist would fine ingenious ways of carefully injecting these in their art.

Messages, yes; codes, no! Dan Brown is a charlatan who copied some nonsense from earlier sources in "The Da Vinci Code". He didn't know that Nicholas Poussin's paintings were also said to contain codes related to those in Da Vinci's works.
