The US army is a mass organization that relies on volunteers. When they enlist someone they get not only the cream of the crop but a few rotten apples too. These rotten apples commit crimes in the military in peace time as well as war but it usually only makes the local news papers. Given that there is a reporter every square foot in Iraq this crime was destined to be world news.
Lack of adequate supervision allowed these few with criminal tendencies to misuse the authority of a military uniform to commit crimes like this one.

What is wrong with you. US troops are just a slice of the general population of the US. There will be some bad ones in every group. Did you say this when the mass murderers were doing their thing, the guys who kidnapped the little girls and killed them, did you respond the same way about that.
I can speak from experience with 23 years in the military. The expectations that the US population as a whole place on the young men and women of the military, alot under the age of 25 is way beyond what is expected from those in the civilian world.
Where else will you find a 19 year old young man walking around with a M-16 hunting someone who is trying to kill him. Not at McDonalds.

First of all... you can't make a blanket statement about all troops like that. If you use some common sense logic you will know that over 1 million have deployed since the conflict began. Out of the 1 million - for whatever reason, a few have misjudgment or are just bad apples...

Take a pool of 1 million civilians and you will mathematically get the same result. There are plenty of service members that do the right thing - one a daily basis, and put their a s s on the line so that people like you can sit on their couch and criticize them.

First, blaming ALL of our troops for the insane, idiotic and criminal actions of one soldier is in itself insane, idiotic and foolish. The soldier who did this no more represents the "average US soldier" then your atrocious spelling, your nearly incomprehensible grammar and nearly non-existent punctuation represents the average English capabilities of the people of your age level of education. And at this point I question your intellect and your ability to communication through the written word.

Applying the same logic and guilt by association that you use to chastise and castigate ALL of our troops based on the actions of a single man then I can only conclude that the students, teachers and the parents associated with your grade / school must ALL be uneducated fools.

Honestly, how difficult is to spell Iraq correctly when the word is constantly in the newspaper? That is assuming that you read any newspapers?

Im siding with the answer Cindy gave, and that we should not put ALL troops into a basket, and from one particular incident, label all the others just as bad. Shame on you!
War sucks...it gets ugly, people die. Rape and murder, well...I expect a professional soldier to stay professional.

Ok...Teacher, man...I'm shocked at your response. It may be that a British journalist was killed, but please dont just ASSUME an American soldier "just walked up and shot an ally"...Theres no water to the artical anyways...Boy, our guys didnt just hop on some ships and planes and go to war on their own!!!!!! Keep the blame centred on the fact...Bush.
I gave the question a thumbs down, no way I'll just sit back and allow people to bash my troops!!!

please Don't put all troops as with this soldier not all are like him. I have been with the ARMY for 21 years and this is the first time someone is grouping all soldiers together boy you are wrong some men would lay down and die before the hurt a child. If you look why are they over there to help women and children live a better life. God Bless our troops.

don't blame the troops.i know for a fact troops aren't allowed out of the base at night in Iraq.and during the day when they are out on patrol there is always somebody in charge.the soldiers do exactly as they are told .that is their job.they march how they are told, fight like their told, sleep where their told etc.what you think he was given a weekend pass or something .not in Iraq he wasn't.just like those soldiers at the Abu Grahib prison, they are under strict command and follow orders.i believe this is another leadership maneuver.this time the soldier screwed up and got a conscience.so don't blame all the soldiers.

When you are involved with a lot of very nasty images of war around you guys that you have known for years getting blown to pieces and the people that you are protecting many would rather see you dead.
Now think of the pretty good life you have on hold for these jerks. You will see a lot of really stupid stuff happen.
But there really are no excuses

This has happened in every war , in every army , in world history .
It's regretable and a harshly punished crime .
Compare the crime rate amongst our troops with any city of 150,000 and our troops have a much better record over the same time frame .

My brother in law was in the same group as the men that did that. Although he was not involved the Iraqis took out their aggretions on all the guys stationed in the same camp as those guys. He now has perminent hearing loss do to a attack that happened when he was in a convoy. I do not understand what these guys were thining but i am very angry that it hurt my family. Also it make all of Americans look bad. It makes Fort Campbell where these guys were stationed look bad too. I hope they get all thats acoming to them. Killing someone esp a child even if it is with a country we are at war with is not moral or even understandable.
