My girlfriend dislikes Italian food, ostensibly because it causes her to have stomachaches. When we eat noodles, like spaghetti, vermicelli, fettucini, linguini, papardelle, etc., she does sometimes have stomachaches, which is why we rarely eat these things. However, when we eat non-noodle-shaped pasta, like penne rigate, farfalle, macaroni, and orzo, she doesn't have this problem. Stuffed pastas like tortellini and ravioli can go either way.

It is my considered opinion that she is insane.

Both groups are made from the same ingredients. I believe this is a psychological issue for your girl friend. Perhaps the size or length means something to her. She will eat the shorter or smaller types because they easily fit in her mouth and she can control the amounts. Otherwise there is definitely something she is bothered by.

Some of them might be made differently. Or not cooked the same amount. Some pastas take 5 minutes to cook, others 12 minutes. You'd have to research the different kinds of pastas (read the labels in the store) and try to figure out the pattern.
Or it could be what you PUT on the pasta--do you put the same thing on every type? If you do, and you love your girlfriend, just eat the kind she likes and forget about the rest. If you don't, it might be the toppings/fillings.

I would be willing to guess that it is not the pasta as much as the sauce on the pasta that is messing with her stomach. Try getting her to eat some pasta noodles with just butter or maybe some alfreto sauce. I bet it won't bother her stomach then.

Drew,
You are right she is crazy. All pasta is made from the same ingredients. They are just shaped in different ways.
