I've seen this done in everything from long thin conventional streaks, to wide chunking. I like the effect achieved somewhere in the mid-range, with chunked stripes no wider than about 5/8 of an inch.
And the best colour show occurs if your streaks are first pre-bleached. If you don't strip the black colour out first, the purple will just disappear, except for a purple sheen under bright lights.

Make sure to first bleach the sections where you want the purple, if you put purple over black it will only change the hue, not the colour. So once you've bleached your streaks, apply a GOOD colour that won't fade every week. DO NOT USE MANIC PANIC or any other 'metallic' dyes if you think you'll ever want to cover or change the colour.
Really easy way: start with all over highlighting cap, leave on 40 min, then once you're rinsed, DO NOT CONDITION, let your hair dry, and then apply your colour. Your whole head will have a purple hue, but only some spots will be vibrant.

Would look good, but probably won't show up on black hair as black is darker than purple. You'll need to bleach the hair you want to streak first.

Hey!
I also have jet black hair (naturally) and wanted purple streaks.
Went to the hairdresser (excellent guy) who bleached my hair, put in the purple dye and waited.
And waited....
and waited....
and waited.....
It didn't take, and my hair came out puke green, I had to have pink put over it to cover it up which was really cool actually.
Apparently dark hair doesn't take dark colours very well.
I ended up getting extensions in the end. I think guys can get them too.
My advice, to avoid looking like a convoy of pigeons dumped their bowels on you is to go with a funky red. It spices up black hair no end, and you're guaranteed it'll work!
Good luck, and don't make the same mistake I did!

It looked awesome on my friend's hair, almost like in the cartoons when they show shiny black hair as purple-ish. Her hair was a natural black, though, and the purple was very dark and leaning toward the blue-side rather than red.

Sure, Purple is my favorite color and my hair is really dark. You need to strip out your black then add purple. Purple is sort of feminine, blue or green is better if you like the ladies.

I'd fine read stripes put in my black hair once - that was nice. My friend had thick purple stripes put in hair black hair at the same time and it was a disaster. Motto: go for thin stripes!

ur hair dresser knows better..
4 ur in4mation- dark colours dont catch in2 dark hair, so either u mus 1st bleach it n then put colour or put a lighter colour than ur hair.
bleachg n puttg the relevant colour is a hassle 4 u 2 maintain coz it l fade away & only the bleach (yellow colour) will remain, so then u hav 2 apply colour evry 3 weeks or so 2 bring it bac 2 life !! c i told u, its a hassle...
so instead u cud go 4 shades of reds, coz reds suit black hair n whatever skin colour ( tan, fair, dark, white) .
u cud go 4 red, burgundy, deep burgundy, rich burgundy red or even burgundy brown.. all colours cud b applied, or 2 or 1 or as ur wish..
all the best in ur new look.
