Greggs plc is the largest specialist retail bakery chain in the United Kingdom. It is based in Newcastle and is quoted on the London Stock Exchange.

Greggs was founded in the 1930s by John Gregg with a single shop on Tyneside. Major expansion began soon after it was taken over by his son, Ian, on his death in 1964. The company has grown steadily over the years and now has in excess of one thousand outlets. Newcastle itself has ten stores in its city centre, whilst Sunderland has six Greggs all within three minutes walking distance of each other. It has a divisional structure with central bakeries around the country supplying the shops in their surrounding areas. Turnover for the 53 weeks ended 1 January 2005 was £504.2 million, which pre-tax profits of £46.7 million and post-tax profits of £31.6 million.

As well as selling British hot savouries such as sausage rolls and Cornish pasties local items are also available. Traditional Tyneside and, more generally, North East England foods are usually available, including the Stottie.

In 2003, in an attempt to test the foreign market, Greggs opened four stores in Belgium; principally in Antwerp and Leuven.

The retail bakery Bakers Oven is also part of Greggs

Greggs plc is the UK’s leading retailer that specialises in sandwiches, savouries and other bakery-related products, with a particular focus upon takeaway food and catering.

In 1972, Gregg's opened its first restaurant in Warwick, Rhode Island. A comfortable 130-seat, family-style restaurant with affordable prices, the menu was limited to mainly deli-style sandwiches, homestyle soups, chowder, a variety of salads, a bakery and a beer/wine menu.

Over the years, the menu grew to include dinners and daily specials as well as late night breakfast items. A main attraction was our luscious desserts, prepared strictly from scratch and using only the highest quality ingredients. Seating was increased and a Take-out Shoppe was added so that customers could conveniently purchase all of our items to go, including our fabulous desserts.

Our second restaurant opened in East Providence in 1979, maintaining the same concept, but enlarging the dining room to seat 180 and accommodate 80 in the Pub with a full liquor license. Customers can unwind and relax in our Pub and enjoy their favorite cocktails, appetizers or our delicious frozen drinks. The Pub has become famous for its hand-carved deli sandwiches, including fresh roasted turkey, and its quick and friendly service.

One of our busiest locations opened in 1985 on North Main Street in Providence. The guest volume was so great that we enlarged the deli-style Pub menu to feature all of Gregg's menu items.

In 1985, we also opened a commissary in Pawtucket, where we produce practically all our bakery items and food items such as soups, sauces and gravies that are used in all our restaurants. Many are prepared from scratch and all from the highest quality ingredients. The Commissary operates seven days a week, 363 days a year. The capacity of the Commissary permits us to grow to include additional restaurants.

Our fourth restaurant opened in North Kingstown in April, 1993. The colors and decor are a bit different than the other locations, but we still maintain the highest standards for food, service and cleanliness.

Today, each restaurant handles between 8,000 and 10,000 customers per week.

Reservations for tours and large groups can be accommodated by calling Janet Courtois at 738-5700 Ext. 150.

Because of our high volume and expanding menu, Gregg's developed its own touch screen point of sales system. This system was created because the equipment available at the time was not adequate to handle our large menu. The system Gregg's developed, PosiTouch, is now distributed all over the U.S., Canada and Europe.

In the spring of 1996, our point of sales company, Gregg's and Restaurant Data Concepts, moved into a new office building in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Gregg's remains dedicated to the concept which made it a Rhode Island tradition -- a comfortable, family-style restaurant with delicious quality homestyle food and desserts and affordable prices.
