Hi,
Sounds like you have had a hard time of it. I am a nurse and I work in rehab, and I see a lot of stroke victims. I think you should talk to your doctor about the risk of another stroke because the reason for your first stroke plays a big factor in the chances of another. Some people have strokes because of life style, meaning we commonly see people who are very over weight (like 50+ pounds over), heavy smokers, high blood pressure, and heavy drinkers. Some contributing factors we can change by choices we make, others we cannot. No one here can tell you if you are at high, moderate, or low risk because one needs to know history. You did not say if the stroke caused you any disability?

I think that in general in most cases strokes can be prevented and not only by life style changes like don't smoke, don't drink alcohol, have regular check ups because a very big factor is high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, both increase anyones risk of stroke, and both can usually be controlled by diet, exercise and medication. Visit the heart and stroke foundation, they are a great source of information.

Nerve pain is another matter, that is a really hard one to cope with. I know it is the worst pain. I pinched nerve is not permanent, it can be treated and should be, usually rest and physio will fix it, and if not surgery. It is not something anyone should be suffering with permanently, if your doctor is not referrring you, than you need a new doctor. Anyway, I wish you all the best, and good luck.

That depends on what caused the stroke. If it was High Blood Pressure and its now under control you should be fine. If something else caused the stroke you doctor should be able to tell you what the chances of having another one would be. As far as the nerve pain goes, Narcotics don't work very well. Your doctor should have you on a medication like Neurontin that's used specifically for nerve pain. That along with the narcotics should help you quite a bit. Also If you haven't already I would see a Neurologist and a Neurosurgeon. I have the same problem but so far nothing is being pinched. My neurosurgeon says when that happens they will operate to alleviate the pain. Hope this helps you some. I know what its like to live in constant pain I also have fibromyalgia and arthritis and have to take narcotics for the rest of my life. The pain has disabled me. Good luck.

almost all people who have a stroke have more. there is no way of telling how long it will be between them though. If you were lucky enough to keep strength in both sides of your body I suggest a life style change. Better diet and light exercise. If not there is a distinct possibility you could spend the rest of your life in a nursing home are in bed at to weak to do anything and loss of funtion on at least one side of your body.

neuropathic pain is often not well handeld by narcs...need to add meds like tegretol or neurontin. Another hemmorhagic stroke is probably not likely, depending on where that one came from. If it was an isolated aneurysm, then you could never see another one.
