The definition of exorcist is a delusional human being who is going to horribly torment another human being to remove some possessing entity, when in fact the person that they are supposedly helping most likely has some mental illness that the exorcist is actually making worse. Anyone who really believes in possession and who would call upon the services of an exorcist clearly needs mental help themselves.

Usually a priest or specially trained person performs this. It is a casting out of evil spirits. The person, or priest performing this exorcism has to be very spiritual, and be strong in Jesus. There is a danger involved when there actually is an evil spirit, as it can take over the priest or exorcist.
I once had an exorcism done at my brothers home, as the family had seen weird things around the house, on several occasions. Two priests came to his home, and they went from room to room, inc. the basement, and prayed to Jesus to rid the home of evil. It was interesting to see, and yet scary. Afterward, we asked if they had known there were evil spirits, they said "yes, there were".
We had hoped that they would be gone, after that, but unfortunately, those spirits had taken over one of the occupants of the house, and that person wasn't there at the time of the exorcism. They should have been exorcized, as well.
My brother had to eventually move out of the house. To this day, the person still lives in that awful house, and still is posessed by this evil. It has affected this persons relationships with everyone, and no one wants to go there or be with them. The house is in a state of disaster, and confusion! There is clutter and dirt everywhere, and has an eerie vibe. I ocassionally go there with my brother, to get more of his stuff out of there, and we can't wait to leave.
True story...I could write a book about all the terrible experiences that have gone on in that house..
I'm not Catholic, but I do believe that the Priests knew what they were doing, however, the person that should have exorcized, wasn't present, and denied there being any evil in the house...

it means one who performs exorcisms or the casting out of demons. It is a Catholic title and while the term exorcist or exorcism is not in the bible, casting out demons in the Lord's name is scripturally based and sound.
