Did they give you the car, or did they loan it to you to use for a while until you can get settled in CA and buy your own? Are you a student in CA, or did you move there and establish residency?

If you are a student, or are military, you can keep your car registered in you home state with no problems. If your parents have just loaned you the vehicle, then you are still in good shape. If they gave you the car (signed it over to you) and you have moved your legal residence to CA, you will have to get a CA drivers license, and register and insure the car in CA.
