Klsnet is correct.

This is the imperfect tense, they WERE expecting. The future tense has a u instead of an a.

Imperfect
1) bam...bamus
2) bas....batis
3) bat.....bant

Future
1) bo......bimus
2) bis.....bitis
3) bit......bunt

The previous answers are incorrect. The form is 3rd person plural IMPERFECT, not future (which would be "exspectabunt").

They will look out for...
They will look forward to...
They will await...

It s the future 1 form of the verb "expectare", so the meaning is:

they will wait (for sth.)/ foresee/ expect ;-)

Oups- yeah I m sorry, Jeannie must be right, it s not future but past tense...

They will expect. the clue is the "ba" in the middle.
