Every religion, pagan or not, has a heaven too. And they are, for the most part, very similar to the Christain idea of Heaven. Why believe in that? Because it's part of the religion!
Most things in modern religion can draw connections to some older antiquated system of belief. The classical representation of God is supposed to look just like Zeus, Satan bares a striking resemblance to most of the old pagan fertility gods. Even the word Hell is borrowed from the name of a norse Goddess of the underworld (Hel).
It's just the way the system works, religion forces society to evolve (or to stop evolving), and, when it loses the power to do that, it evolves with society.

Hell is not a false teaching. It's mentioned at least two dozen times in the New Testament, often by Christ Himself, and often in very vivid and glowing detail.
The fact that pagans also may have believed in hell, doesn't mean it's not real. Even pagans get some things right.

I don't think people get the right understand of Hell. As people get these mental images. I think hell is when we cross points on earth that will afect our after life in large ways. A soul that can't move forward or are faced with fears they manifest by negative actions they took in life on earth.

If I didnot want to believe in Jesus Christ, I would not want to believe in hell either, but that still would not eliminate hell.
