Whenever I wake up, within seconds, my dog jumps up and runs over to my bed (he sleeps across the room in a corner).
He does this BEFORE I actually get up. So by waking up, I mean that I will open my eyes and realize I am awake, and before I have done anything else, he jumps up and runs to me.
This happens EVERY morning, regardless of what time I wake up (so for example, on weekends at 8am, but weekdays between 5am and 5:30am, so it's not a time issue...)
Any ideas?
Does he hear my breathing pattern, or do I change the way I move? How does he know?

Dogs' primary form of communication is body language. How a dog breathes and moves, tells another dog how to react to it. Hence, your dog is finely attuned to you because you are his pack leader. When you stir, he stirs because the day has begun. Unless he's very very asleep, he will be ready to take his cue from you - and so he will have one ear on you all the time. As soon as he hears your breathing pattern change, he'll be ready to go.

Dogs have a very acute sense of hearing.

A firefighter took his Rottweilers out for his mile run - the female stopped a quarter of the way and turned back home - no way to get her to come on - she was headed home. So he ran home - and collapsed on the living room floor. She picked up the cordless phone from its cradle and brought it to him - he called 9-1-1 - having a heart attack. The theory is that she heard his heart skipping.

Anyway - when we wake up - we change breathing patterns yes - and sometimes there is a movement associated with it. Smart doggie!

it's funny how dogs know these type of things, my husbsnd drives a truck and often calles me in the middle of the night, my dog seem to know when he will call and wakes me up about 2 minutes before the phone rings, otherwise he will wake me up at 6:57 every morning (my alarm goes off at 7:00). I just wish I could convience him not to do this on weekends....I guess he wants to be my first thought every day LOL

Dogs have a sixth sense most people lack, They see, hear and smell things people cannot detect. Ur dog is attuned to ur sounds and body movements, he instinctly knows when u have awakened. Very much the same way a dog knows when his master is about to arrive home before ur presence is seen. Dogs know much more than they are given credit for and that is a sad fact. I`m happy to hear u have good rapport with ur pet.

It is called animal instinct plus the the law of exercise.....
Of course the dog can predict whats your pattern of waking up by simply looking at you..... it has a strong sense of smell, sight and hearing...... then you have a pattern of waking up... that is why he knows when are you going to wake up.....they're not deep sleeper....

dogs sense things better then humans its like how they can sense an earthquake before it happens its just there keen'nes . your dog knows you and your patters well enough to know when your getting up regardless of what time you get up. you probably kick or something before you wake or he just sits and stairs at you all night until you open you eyes. hes protecting you,
