A seaarch at some Internet sites gives "many ways refined sugar can injure your health". If this is true, why allow the product to be so easily available? Why not treat it like alcohol or even narcotic drugs which are known to injure health?. Besides, why bother to refine raw sugar, when doing so makes it more injurious to health?

Water can cause drowning. That doesn't mean it has to be regulated by the FDA.

Some people are going to over-indulge and eventually kill themselves with food. Perhaps this is just a Darwinian way of limiting the population. Some people are just not smart enough to go on living.

Easy and cheap to make, and it has a very long shelf life, it gives energy fast. A little is ok, too much is bad, there is a problem in the U.S., we eat too much sugar, WAY TOO much. I did NOT KNOW that if you eat too much sugar all of the time, YOU CAN MAKE YOURSELF DIABETIC ! Ask ya doc., if you think I'm kidding. I was eating pasta, and tons of candy all day for years, they finally checked my blood sugar, they were like "WHOA" ! and thought I was "Diabetic". They tested me everyday for a month, once I started eating normal it all dropped back down to normal level, I LEARNED A LOT LAST YEAR, stay away from too much sugar, even if you are NOT diabetic. Once in a while is ok.

it is too long established to challenge it now. it is a powerful addictive drug that kills, but FDA does not classify it that way due to the fact that every american loves it and would revolt if they tried to take it away. even the drug regulators each personally love it and are addicted to it.
best thing is to avoid it as much as possible and warn friends sometimes but not repeatedly as they will kill you.
Refining it makes it more potent and more flexible as sweetener for various things. it is very profitable too. so thats a reason in an industrial capitalistic society that is hard to overcome.

For the same reason processed grains, such as white flour are. There is money in it because people want it...just like tobacco, aspirin, beer, and any number of other things

Because people like it and while someone can make money from it, it will continue to be available. Just like tobacco and alcohol. good analogy.
Besides, why do you think you can control what other humans want to do?

Because it makes money for people who do not use it themselves and have no concern for other peoples health and well being who do use it.

Because we are so addicted to it.

And if aspirin was released today as a new drug - it woud be by perscription as it accomplishes so much.
