It NEEDS to be checked out. It is probably a swollen lymph node. Question is: what made it swell? It could also be nothing, but she needs to know for sure. If it's something bad, there are a LOT of good, effective treatments out there, but it must be caught as early as possible. Here's a site where she can find info, and see if she has any other symptoms:

I started with only one lymph node swollen [at the base of my neck] Bottom line, only a doctor will be able to give her the info she needs.
Best Wishes

depends. there are many types of lumps or masses. A palpable mass ynder the armpit can be anything from an inflamed lymph node due to an infection, a lipoma or an innocent fat pad or it can be a sign of cancer. I think you should remind her that it is best to know for sure than be bothered endless with the thought that it could be cancer. What's more, the best way to manage cancer is early detection. if your friend keeps putting off seeing a doctor, if it does turn out to be cancer, then it would be harder to treat because it might have spread to other parts of the body.

You can't tell by just feeling. A doctor might know what certain lumps feel like but the only way the doctor could know for sure is by taking a biopsy. If it is cancer it needs to be checked out. Then your friend can make choices on what treatments she wants to take.

i had a lump under my arm once and it turned out to be an infection in one of my glands. but the only way to find out for sure is to have it checked by the doctor. There is no way you can make your friend see her doctor she is scared. Just be supportive and use gentle persuasion. good luck.

i am going through the same thing but i am the one with the lump and for weeks i didn't go to the doctor because i thought if the doctor don't tell me its there then it must not be. well they confirmed it sent me for tests and i waited and waited untill i couldn't wait anylonger. i had to know. i have cried and cried untill i don't think there could be anymore tears left in there. the worst part is the waiting. tell her it could be nothing but if not its better to find out early. i see my surgen next week. best of luck.

There's no way to really know with out a biopsy. It could be many things like a blocked lymph node.
