I've just installed IE 7 and found that the sharpness and quality if text on websites and Outlook has suffered. Instead of being sharp and black text is now grey-purple and a little bit fuzzy. What does this mean? Can I uninstall IE 7 and go back to IE 6? I'm running XP Pro SP2 on a Dell Dimension 2400

To begin with, if your graphic card is capable of displaying any of these answers then it's capable of satisfying a web browser. More to the point, the capability of your graphic hardware has nothing to do with your issue - or IE7 - at all, so throwing more hardware at it is a waste of money.

To disable this feature in IE7, visit the link below. There's also a link off that page which discusses the particular "improvement" that causes your issue.

But, in short, all Microsoft have done is enable ClearType by default in the latest version of their browser *and* Outlook Express. ClearType is designed to improve image quality on LCD screens, but unless the display is "tuned" correctly then ugly artifacts may result.

I find this move by Microsoft to be particularly naive. To have ClearType enabled by default is just another show of Microsoft's amazing powers of assumption.

However, folk have suggested you may want to uninstall IE7. I'll not add much to the debate other than to say that it is the first release of a new software product. And new software products, at least from Microsoft, tend to embody the words "buggy" and "exploitable" (not to mention "bloated").

Incidentally, Yahoo! themselves are now pushing this new wonder browser our way from their main page, and that leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Or maybe that's the curry I ate yesterday.

Thanks for a brilliant question. I was 'advised' by Microsoft update pop-up to install IE7 and have had quite a few problems since then. Nice to think I'm not the only one out there. I would think following the advise of another correspondent to go to Control Panel and use the uninstall method should solve the problem. I going to try it.

PS I've removed IE7 and things a lot better!

Click "Add or Remove Programs."
Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.

It is using Clear Text as default which ironically makes the text bold and fuzzy. There are two places where you can go to fix this. Firstly in Internet options go to advanced tab and scroll down to multimedia options and untick the "Always use clear type for HTML".

Secondly open up control panel and go to display then appearance, effects then untick second option which is clear type.

We found IE7 quite dreadful, along with lots of others. I reverted to IE6 by using add/remove software in control panel and am now happily back on IE6
Best of luck!

sounds like your graphics card isn't up to the challenge of IE7 ... yes you can "undo" the install of IE7 ... go to control panel add and remove and you should be able to "roll back" to IE6 ... another fix would be a system restore to before you installed IE7

PS ... I'm using it on an evaluation version of Vista and I don't care for it much either
