Yes it has been done.

In California, Kaiser Steel reduced an entire mountain at Fontana to ore for processing over several years. At Carson Hill, Californai the same thing was done to extract gold. I'm sure it has been done many times.

My last name is Hill. I can't for the life of my know why anyone would ever want to destroy a Hill. Sorry.
