Well, I am a muslim, and I respect hazrat Mohammed (Peace be upon him) beyond any man on earth. But this question bothers me. He was the purest man alive. But why did he begged mercy of Allah? Is it just to teach his followers?
And secondly, In some sentence of Quran, it is said that Allah himself recites a dworud for his prophet Mohammed (SM) (I don't know the English for Dworud, I'll just give an example: Allahumma Salli Ala Mohammadeo Wa-ala ali mohammaden kama swallaita ala ibraahima wa-ala ali ibrahima innka hameedum majeed)
Why does Allah rabbulalamin pray to himself to be kind with his prophet.
(I'm sure there are scientific explanations for all these problems that man-kind is too immature to understand. But for now, I want opinions of the Muslim brothers regarding this matter)

The prophet begged in front of Allah indicating that no matter how pure you are, how holy, how righteous, you still are in need of Allah's mercy. He did this to show that Allah was almighty and that man always has to be humble infront of HIM no matter how many good dead he has done. If he did not do this, then today the religous people would be very proud of themselves saying that we do so much good, we will go straight to heaven. Just to make them realize that no matter what our status, even the prophet himself is in need of Allah's blessing, hence that seals the chapter on humblness.
Second, when Allah says that HE send durroood on Prophet Mohamad, it is in a different context. It can be best explained by this context that, the prophet says that in Heaven Allah will recite Surah rehman, which makes sense when humans recites since the first verce is "Ar-rehman" which means, Allah the reheman refreing to Him as second person. BUT in heaven Prophet said that Allah will say "An-ar-Rehman" meaning, " I Am the Most Merciful". Simlarly, durood wil be in the same context.

Hazrat Mohammad Peace be upon him was after all a human being. And humans do make errors. He didn’t commit any sin. But he might have made errors as humans do. He w is the most pious person to have ever come 2 the planet earth, but he asked GOD for mercy 2 forgive IF he ever made any errors.
GOD sends peace 2 the prophet in order to urge the muslins the importance of the holy prophet in our religion

1. The Holy Prophet was begging Allah for the forgiveness of his Ummah (nation), not his own person.
2. Allah does not pray to himself. He is saying in the verse that He Himself sends peace and blessings upon the Holy Prophet. But all others must ask Allah to send the peace and blessing on their behalf as Allah is the only one who can send it.

The Prophet (p) used to pray 5 times a day too. He used to do voluntary prayers until his heels would crack. His beloved wife Ayesha (ra) asked the Prophet, "why do you pray so much since Allah has forgiven your past and future sins?"
The Prophet (p) replied: "Should I then not be a grateful servant?"
:)
Hope this answers your question young brother.

what's wrong in begging Allah for mercy? he's GOD!!!!
he knows that we will screw up and begged Allah to forgive us. peace and blessings be upon him.
it means "Oh Allah, send grace and honour on Muhammad and
On the family and true followers of Muhammad
just as you sent Grace and Honour on Ibrahim
and on the family and true followers of Ibrahim
Surely, you are praiseworthy, the Great."

Because Prophet P.B.U.H. knew of the punishments of hell and he did not want his ummat to end up there.
Did you know the lightest punishment in hell is that the punished will wear hot burning sandals which will boil his brain.
