I do recycle a lot of my household waste. In my kitchen i have a normal bin, a bin for recycling (that the council will collect) and a box for glass which I take to the bottle bank. I don't throw clothes or blankets away, I donate them to charity. I have green bags for my garden waste that the council collect ( has stopped now for the winter) my neighbour has a tortoise, so he gets all my vegetable tops!
My green Bin is emptied every two weeks, and sometimes, I over fill it.
But what annoys me is the companies that use too much packaging. Like in tesco's, you can buy courgettes in packs, what's wrong with loose? or when you open a box and it's only half full. Why won't the Government start to target these companies as well as the general public?

I have been separating out tin cans and plastic bottles for years for recycling, although getting the kids to take any notice has always proved frustrating.
But did you know that much of what we put in those green bins to be recycled is actually sent outside the EU ? We're talking about somewhere in the region of 2.2 million tons this year. A lot of this is made up of plastics and electronic goods which go to be 'recycled' in China and India where a significant amount ends up in vast unregulated dumps. We are simply passing the problem on to other countries while cooking the books to make ourselves look good.

I try as much as I can, but I don't think I'm doing enough. I hope I can do more, but it looks like different boroughs have different rules and different ways of doing it, and it's confusing. But anyway, for what I see, things they take for recycling are still pretty limited in the area I live in London.
In Japan, where I am form, it is compulsorily to divide your rubbish according to the kind. Different towns have different rules, but the rules are mot so different from town to town, and they recycle pretty much anything. You have to divide your rubbish into different bags according to the kind of it for recycling and collection, otherwise they don't collect it form you at all. I used to find it pain in the neck, but maybe that was a good thing after all. I have been in London for 5 years now, but even until now when I through away things that I know we can recycle, I feel guilty.

I am an avid fan of recycling and its not too much trouble sorting out which goes in what bag. I can sit happy knowing that I am contributing a little to the country and rest assured that I am doing the right thing. I always use my orange sacks and funnily enough I have noticed that my normal waste bin isn't even half full by the beginning of the next week.
I think its the best way forward in helping the environment.

I'm trying to do more, it annoys me that plastic bottles aren't in the council re-cycle list - is this because it is harder to do something with?
I've also invested in some onya bags so don't have to use supermarket bags.
Horrified to find out, while trying to set up recycling boxes at work the the government does not require business to have recycling facilities, and "even if we did, there would be a charge" - where is the incentive to do anything there!!!??

No. I used to live in California where they pick up your trash, take it to a local facility, sort through it, and recycle everything. I though that was so cool. Now I save cans which helps me pay for laundry (in reality I could stop buying soda and use the money for washing) which helps. I also recycle plastic milk jugs. I really feel like people should be encouraged to recycle more and that it should be made more accessable.

Its pretty good where we are, we have food waste bins and weekly collections, plus we take plastic and cardboard to local recycling centres. I take all of my old clothes, shoes and books to charity shops.
But I think it would be easier if the council collected everything - that would encourage more people to do it. I'm also in favour of being charged for your non-recycled rubbish, I think it would really make people (myself included) consider what they were throwing away.
So, in answer to your question, I do a lot, but I am sure there is more I could do and would like to do, it just has to be easier.

I try to recycle what I can, but our community does not collect certain items for recycling; therefore, those items are thrown into the garbage. I do recycle aluminum cans, phonebooks when they are collected, plastic bags, and paper bags. I wish that our community would collect newspapers and cardboard like our old neighborhood did before we moved.
