I was thinking of gelling a wig that I have to make it look cooler...do wigs behave like normal hair as far as styling/products? Or do I have to treat them differently?

For synthetic wigs, you have to follow the care instructions that come with them. You cannot use heating irons on synthetic hair because it will melt and nat up. If you want to curl your synthetic hair, you can mist it with water and curl it with rollers.
Brandy, the singer, has a brand of hair weave out called "Brandy Hair by Sensationnel Pro-10" that is not human, but you can style it and use hot irons on it like it is.

It seems that you didn't plan this out very carefully. The best alternative is to get a different wig. This one obviously is not the right one. Cutting is pretty drastic, especially on a wig, since it was not made for a different style. Once you cut it, you change the whole structure, and it will never look right. This is especially true of synthetic hair. It appears you have a specific style in mind, and glue is not going to work that well. Get another wig in the style you want. Just works better that way.

Synthetic hair cannot be styled like natural hair. Synthetic hair is plastic formed into that particular shape ('style'). Do NOT try to style it with heat implement (hair dryer, curling iron) -- the hair will melt. Your best bet is to buy a synthetic wig in the exact style you like, it will hold the style excellently. If you absolutely must style the wig, consider a human hair wig, which can be styled

Actually, you can use a straightener on a synthetic wig. I used it on mine and as long as you don't hold the plates on it and you use sweeping motions, it works fine.
Gel might not hold, synthetic hair is really heavy, and it doesn't always sit right.

if you only buy the human hair! I don't know if you are going to be ok with that, but you can't tell the difference they blind in with you hair as long as you get the right color.
