Expensive and not worth the cost if you
compare it to other similarly priced systems.

The Bose® CineMate II speaker system is the easiest way to enjoy Bose 2.1-channel home theater performance and bring out the full audio potential of your HDTV. Proprietary TrueSpace® technology enables two compact speakers and an Acoustimass® module to deliver compelling sound for movies, games, sports and more. The system easily connects directly to your TV, avoiding the need to disconnect other sources. And with no rear speakers, there's no wiring to the back of your room.

Bose are generally recognized as being good looking but poor > medium performers and generally overpriced. The links provides a wide range of consumer reviews for these speakers. Judge for yourself, but if I read them I would be very wary of the negative reviews and would discount the positive ones. At the very least assess them for yourself ... and REALLY see if the surround effect works and the sound is as mediocre as some say.
I suggest the C-Net 10 best compact speaker list (last link) might be a good place to look for alternatives (I do note that Bose is nowhere on this list).
Hope this helps.

I love mine. I have the Bose Lifestyle 12 system which I purchaed in 1996 while living in the barracks in the military. To this day, they are still producing quality sound such as the day I bought them. At one point one of my cube fell over from the stand and broke in two. I sent it in for repair and they fixed it at no charge. This was 5 years after purchase. These are the best quality speakers in the world. I paid $1599 back then for this system and to this day this very same system still goes for the same amount.

Bose makes a QUALITY product...The problem is that to replace one, little, 3 inch PAPER speaker in your $1,000 Bose system it's ONLY $12...Bose is riding on it's NAME...Five $12 speakers DO NOT equal $1,000...This is why they've received this name:
Boldly
Overpriced
Stereo
Equipment
Among other things wrong with the product...The BOSE speaker systems only deliver about 66% of the available sound spectrum...They ONLY play 20Hz to 13,000Hz...Humans HEAR 20Hz to 20,000Hz. EVERY other speaker in the WORLD will at the VERY LEAST play the exstent of HUMAN HEARING...It's like trying to WRITE a letter and ONLY using the alphabet "A" through "R" (throwing out "S" through "Z")...You couldn't do it, right?
Also the SUBWOOFER plays frequencies up to about 300Hz...Anything over 100Hz and the bass CEASES to be OMNI-DIRECTIONAL (unable to locate the sub with your EARS) and you can hear VOICES coming from the SUB...In addition to that, there's a huge HOLE between the FREQUENCIES (sounds) of the speakers and the subwoofer...Those TINY "cubes" won't play LOW enough to MATCH that ridiculous subwoofer. It's like missing a dozen keys right in the middle of your PIANO.
A GOOD home theater set up has the SUB play 20Hz to 100Hz and then the SPEAKERS should play 100Hz to 20,000Hz...The idea is that you DON'T miss any of the sound spectrum...A CHEAP speaker ONLY has good TREBLE and BASS...A really GOOD speaker has good MIDRANGE...That means "VOICES"...When you DEMO speakers listen to how CLEAR and NATURAL the vocals sound...NOT the bass and treble...Here's some TECHNICAL info on why BOSE is lacking...Click this link below:
http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html
Now you can get TWICE the sound for HALF the price with ANY other similar speaker system...First you need a speaker that's NOT made of PAPER...Paper is the WORST material to make speaker cones out of...ANY other material is BETTER to make speaker cones out of...Check out these models of the "Tiny-Speaker, Giant-Subwoofer" models...Click the links below:
Here's the KLIPSCH "Cinema 10":
http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/cinema-10.aspx
Here's the PARADIGM "Cinema 70 CT":
http://www.paradigm.com/Website/SiteParadigmProduct/ParadigmModels/CinemaCT/Cinema70CT_Specs.html
Here's the INFINITY "TSS-450":
http://www.infinitysystems.com/homeaudio/product_detail.aspx?prod=TSS-450CHR
All of these systems (and there are MANY more) sound SO much better than the Bose and cost a lot LESS.
Lastly, if you've been to one of those BOSE STORES and been completly blown away, here's why...Behind the walls at the Bose store there's over $30,000 worth of AUDIO EQUIPMENT to make those "cubes" sound terrific...They also spend even MORE money to make the room itself acousticly perfect for their product...The other nail in the lid of the coffin is the DEMO music they use at the store is TWEAKED to only sound good on BOSE speakers...It's hard to lose on THAT playing field...Go and do an "A" and "B" comparison in a store that carries two or more DIFFERENT "Bose-Like" speaker packages. Bring your OWN music...Something you know and love and listen to ALL the time...Your ears will be able to tell if it sounds BETTER of WORSE than what you're use to.

I bought mine last march, & i like it. Plus you have a 12-month payment plan by just putting in on your credit or debit card each month. The only problem I had was it stopped working last summer after a strong lighting/thunderstorm. They replaced it with no charge.
