John 1:19-22 This was the testimony of John when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John whether he claimed to be the Messiah. He flatly denied it. "I am not the Messiah " he said. "Well then who are you?", they asked. "Are you Elijah?" "No," he replied. "Are you that Prophet?" "No."
The Jews, in this passage, were waiting for 3 prophecies. Elijah, Messiah and That Prophet! Clearly this indicates that their must come another prophet, who is not the messiah, who is/was he?

There was three questions of which the last was "Are you that prophet?" They already ask if he was Elijah and he answered "NO".They asked "Are you the Messiah?" and he said "NO".Thus that Prophet can't be Elijah!

The prophecy of a prophet comes from Deuteronomy, but it has been misinterpreted through the years. Jews today generally do have the right interpretation, which is that Deuteronomy was not speaking of some particular prophet, but of prophets IN GENERAL. If you will read the surrounding verses of the passage, you will see what I mean.
Apparently there were some Jews in Jesus' day who thought this verse did mean a specific prophet. They probably thought it would be the Messiah, or some "son of man" or similar figure.

I think the original prophecy was malachi 4.
I have vauge memories about Mose's and Isaiah talking the same thing, that a person is coming first.

Our messiah has no longer yet come, yet we commonly (outdoors lots of the peculiar extremely-Orthodox sects) spend little or no time questioning about the messiah. the idea of "waiting" for a messiah is somewhat overseas. You *paintings* for the arrival of the messiah through doing good deeds (mitzvot in Hebrew). We did not reject Jesus any more beneficial than you Christians "rejected" Mohammad, Bahaullah, Joseph Smith, and various different prophets from later religions that say Christianity is incomplete. We basically have no longer something to say about what different religions believe. As for the prophesies, definite, we've Isaiah, Ezekiel and others which have stated what the criteria of the messiah are. Jesus fulfilled none of them.

You are right there is a Prophet whom is being waited for. This prophet is according to deutronomy is from "THEIR brethren" the verse before that about Jesus is "YOUR brethren" hence there is a great prophet the greatest prophet better said according to Jesus who said, "The least in the kingdom is greater than he" So yea it was not referring to Elijah. I get from their brethren is a figure of kind of a gentile or someone not born in Israel because its not "among our brethren". So yea your getting close.Oh and its not Muhammad because Muhammad spoke to an angel and Moses and Jesus spoke to God "face to face" hence this coming prophet will speak to God "face to face" and not through an angel.

I believe the term was "Elias" and not Elijah as written....
I believe that "prophet" to be Christ. But, remember, they did not accept him......
It is what he has always been referred to as, a prophet.
See Deut 18:15, 18; Mal 4:5-6
Deuteronomy 18:15 (KJV)
LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
Malachi 4:5-6 (KJV)
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

Prophet Mohamed 'PUOH"
In Deuteronomy 18, Moses stated that God told him: “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account.” (Deuteronomy 18:18-19).1
From these verses we conclude that the prophet in this prophecy must have the following three characteristics:
1) That he will be like Moses.
2) That he will come from the brothers of the Israelites, i.e. the Ishmaelites.
3) That God will put His words in to the mouth of this prophet and that he will declare what God commands him.
Jesus "PUOH" can not be 3 of them Son of god and Prophet and Messiah

You have misread the passege, it aks about Jesus he said no, then it says, are you Elijah, are you the prophet? and he then replied no.
They were only refering to Jesus and Elijah. This has nothing to do with Mohahameds(ptui).
