World War I (abbreviated WWI), also known as the First World War, the Great War and "The War to End All Wars" was a global military conflict that took place mostly in Europe between 1914 and 1918. It was a total war which left millions dead and helped to shape the modern world.

The Allied Powers, led by France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and later Italy and the United States, defeated the Central Powers: Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire.

Much of the fighting in World War I took place along the Western Front, within a system of opposing manned trenches and fortifications (separated by a "no man's land") running from the North Sea to the border of Switzerland. On the Eastern Front, the vast eastern plains and limited rail network prevented a trench warfare stalemate from developing, although the scale of the conflict was just as large. Hostilities also occurred on and under the sea and — for the first time — from the air. More than nine million soldiers died on the various battlefields, and millions more civilians perished.

The war caused the disintegration of four empires: the Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman, and Russian. Germany lost its overseas empire, and states such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were created, or recreated, as was the case with Poland.

World War I created a decisive break with the old world order that had emerged after the Napoleonic Wars, which was modified by the mid-19th century’s nationalistic revolutions. The results of World War I would be important factors in the development of World War II 21 years later.

I think because although the fighting stopped in 1918 the treaty wasnt signed until 1919. World War 1, also known as the First World War or the the Great War, the War of the Nations and the War to End All Wars, was a world conflict lasting from 1914 to 1919, with the fighting lasting until 1918. The war was fought by the Allies on one side, and the Central Powers on the other. No previous conflict had mobilized so many soldiers or involved so many in the field of battle. By its end, the war had become the second bloodiest conflict in recorded history. World War 1 became infamous for trench warfare, where troops were confined to trenches because of tight defenses. This was especially true of the Western Front. More than 9 million died on the battlefield, and nearly that many more on the home fronts because of food shortages, genocide, and ground combat. Among other notable events, the first large-scale bombing from the air was undertaken and some of the century's first large-scale civilian massacres took place, as one of the aspects of modern efficient, non-chivalrous warfare. This timeline covers all the political and military events that occurred across Europe and the rest of the world during 1919. With World War 1 over, the Allies squable between themselves over the terms of the treaty of versailles, whilst Germany sinks into violence and chaos as the Freikorps puts down various Communists attempts to seize power.

depends what you mean Great Britain and France declared war on the empire of Germany and the Austro Hungarian Empire on thee 4th of August 1914. The guns stopped firing on the 11 day of November 1918, but the treaty of Versailles (that formally brought the war to an end) was not signed until 1919. Also, technically until the U.S.A joined the war in 1917, what became the First world war could not be so called.

WWI effectively started on June 28 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, was shot and killed in Sarajevo. And although hostilities ended on 11 November 1918 (Armistice Day), it was not until 28 June 1919 that the Treaty of Versailles finally ended the war.

However, what really worries me is why, if you can use Yahoo! Answers, can't you use Google? What worries me even more is why I am actually writing this!!

Have a nice day.
