There are some banks in Australia with nationwide branches. Westpac, Commonwealth, ANZ, National. These all have cheque (check) accounts, savings accounts and run Mastercard accounts. Your best bet might be to open a check account with a deposit of a few hundred. Many Australian employers pay direct into check accounts. You then can use an Australian Mastercard or similar to draw on the account via automatic teller machines. These machines can be found in all towns of any size. You can use a Commonwealth bank machine to draw on a National, Westpac or ANZ account or any way about. There is a small fee for using a different bank's machine but there is not difficulty about it. Probably the most widely used card is Mastercard, followed by Visa. American Express is pretty widely used too but the other two are more popular and will be accepted virtually everywhere in Australia.
