Dear love my lord,
Let me give you three principles that i think are helpful:
1) Based on Philippians 4:8- We are told to meditate upon those things that are lovely, pure, etc. One thing we know about music is that songs, jingles, words, can get caught into our heads. So one thing to consider is what kinds of thoughts is the music putting into your head.
2) Based on Galatians 5:13- The Scriptures also tell us that God has given us freedom, but we should be careful that we do not use our freedom to fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Colossians 3:23 tells us that we should do all things to the glory of God. As a person that loves rap music- i've found myself to listening to less and less of it (i love the wittiness in putting lyrics together and the rhyming, flow, etc., and the beat) but quite often the messages it conveys are unedifying.
3) Lastly based on 1 Corinthians chapter 9 and 10. Paul tells us that we must consider those things which may stumble our brothers. i think in what we listen to we should also consider what non-believers will think as well as younger less mature believers. Paul was willing to sacrifice for the opportunity to make Christ known to others.
Personally i love oldies, rap, and the 80s as well. Just follow the principles above and i think it'll help you discern. i've try to give you principles from God's word because i think that should ultimately direct you and not just people's opinions or personal practices.
Hope that helps. God Bless You.
Kindly,
Nickster

When I was younger I heard this stories that some rock songs are "corrupted'. I actually had a brochure about this, listing "corrupted" bands and rock songs. But we used to listen rock songs ourselves so we made big fun of this brochure. It's ridiculous.
Some years ago I heard a priest preaching that Beatles music is corrupted. I was so angry. Beware of close-minded people. And listen whatever pleases your ear. To refrain from "words" that you hear in songs is even worse. Won't you enjoy Halloween because it's about ghosts and witches? How many people read Stephen King? Well lots of these rock songs are about stuff like that. They just add some spice to attract young kids imagination and to sell the album. It's nothing wrong. At some point they will grow up and listen to softer music.
Music is one of the most beautiful things that exists. One philosopher could apprehend God by listening to Bach.

Listening to music- even music with no lyrics- can stir up powerful emotions in the soul of the listener. Even Beethoven was considered to be vulgar in his time. The heighening of emotional states outside of specific devotional activity will always lead to distraction from the true source of joy- that is God. I cannot in good conscience recommend any music at all, other than the Psalms of course, and a few devotional bands:
Led Zeppelin
AC/DC
Rush
Pink Floyd
Prince
Queen
Judas Priest
and a few more but ONLY LISTEN BACKWARDS as this will reverse the evil lyrics of the songs in question and make them really good afterall.
Your affectionate Uncle,
Screwtape

I don't think it's wrong to listen to secular music, so long as it doesn't have the bad or violent lyrics, or the violent raging sound to it. Music can really affect our moods, so I think it is important to see how the music makes us feel, and if it makes us feel angry then we should not listen to it.
I personally prefer to listen to devotional music most of the time. I listen to religious music from all around the world, and lately I've been listening to some Irishy-sounding Gospel music that is very nice. Most of it is sung by the St. Louis Jesuits.
I also listen to George Strait and Bob Wills, and some Latin music once in a while. I like the Spanish stuff because it is so happy and upbeat.

I only listen to music that glorifies God in some way.
We have a great radio station here that plays Christian rock from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Check it out at www.theprodigalradio.com it is some of the best music ever made. I was surprised how many of the songs that were popular on secular radio in the 70's and 80's were actually Christian songs.

I consider myself a Christian, yet I see nothing at all wrong with listening to any and all types of music. I don't consider any music as "corrupt" any more than I consider any particular word as corrupt. Music is an expression of your soul translated through words. As such words are a verbal expression of soul and identity, and so long as you arent using either to specifically attack or offend anyone then there should be nothing wrong with it in the eyes of man or God. The suggestion that there are certain taboo "words" or "phrases" is quite illogical to me. Also the suggestion that one should not listen to something that makes them "angry" to me is off kilter slightly. Sure anger for the wrong reasons isn't what God wants of you, but righteous anger is a different thing.... Did Christ not himself get angry at the money changers operating in the temple, and cast them out with whips and overturn their tables? Sure he did, and as such we shouldn't be afraid of anger so long as it is for the right reasons.

For the most part my children and I listen to Christian metal like Norma Jean, As I Lay dieing, Fly Leaf, and worship music like Third Day. My children go to concerts like Spirit West Coast. We do listen to mostly Christian music. We also like The White Stripes and System of a Down. They are not Christian, but for the most part they are not bad....like slipknot.
I guess we watch the content of the music we listen to. If it brings away from God, we don't listen to it.

Nah, there's nothing wrong with what you listen to! I listen to Bob Marley and his songs are full of religion...going back to Mount Zion, how they're Jah's people...and so on!
I also listen to music here and there from the 20's, 50's, 80's!
ooooh, I hate heavy metal! The only AC/DC song I ever listento is Thunderstruck! but of course i don't understand what he's singing

I enjoy listening to Christian music because it helps me to keep my focus on Jesus, rather than the things of the world. But like you, I still love the old classics and the country music that I was raised on, because it brings back many happy memories. God gave us music to enjoy. So I believe that there is nothing wrong with listening to these talented musicians who have worked hard. God gave them that talent, so why should they not use it?
