On average, each US citizen has more than twice the energy consumption of a western European, according to statistics for 2003, and almost ten times that of a Chinese!
The U.S. holds less than 5 percent of the world's population but produces nearly 25 percent of carbon emissions.
China, the world's second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the United States, ratified Kyoto. Its growing economy will increase it’s emissions but it will be a long time before it catches up with the US.
Next come Russia then India.
The fifth country is much harder to tie down because there are so many.
