I chose civil over mechanical for a couple of reasons. First, people will always want roads, water and to flush their toilets. Second, civil engineers aren't limited to populated areas. Even very small towns need a civil engineer, so I have a wide variety of geographic locations to choose from.
What motivates me is designing things, seeing them built and helping people be safe.

go to community for a year. Finish up with math. Go to a good engineering school (Michigan Tech being an excellent choice) Get a bachelors in civil engineering (it has it's own degree) 3-4 years there to get your degree.
