My boyfriend speaks Spanish and is learning English as a second language. He's very eager to learn, but sometimes seems to be having a tough time with it. I've bought him books to help him and try to help him by speaking with him and teaching him. Sometimes he will seem to have come a long way and seems to be speaking and understanding it very well, and then all of the sudden will seem to have forgotten what he's learned. Is this a common problem when learning a new language (especially English)?

What are some ways I can help him? I know a good amount of Spanish, but speak it terribly and cannot really understand it when spoken.

He's doing very well with vocabulary, he just has trouble with his sentence structure, which is understandable. But sometimes he has a very difficult time with understanding when being spoken to and with his pronunciation of certain words.

Languages are best learned between the ages of 1-6. At that point the number of language that can be aquired is limitless, literally. The older we get the harder it is to learn a new language because languages are rule-governed and the rules are not always the kind you can pin-point unless you study language. It is widely accepted that to carry on with conversational speech in a new language an adult must have been studying at least 7 years. This number is not just a coincidence with the 6 year span in which a child learns language. Hearing the language and seeing how the language is used is the best thing for him. And the reason that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn is that we frequently borrow words from thousands of different origins. So English words dont necessarily follow one specific pattern. Additionally, he has to learn syntax of a new language which refers to the rules governing the word order of forming sentences. It takes more than simply learning vocabulary. It is also very limiting to try to teach someone a new language if you dont know the differences between the old and the new. One suggestion I can give you is to teach him word components like prefixes and suffixes and define them so that he can begin to extract meaning from words which can serve as a foundation to build upon. Language is infinitely complex. It sounds to me like he is doing a fine job and is putting in the effort. you will just have to encourage him to keep learning.

Advice him to write down Spanish words/sentences translated to English, then he can practice learning the English language... After he absorbed and got a good memory of the first words, he can continue the learning process, he will continue... with you being his teacher. If he forgets, he can just refer to the notes you made for him, repetition is a good way to memorize English words.

1. you should not see this as an "either/or" proposition. You need to look at the two situations separately. Do you want to be with man you love any more? Have you tried to make it work and you are just mismatched and not right for each other? is he unwilling to do what he has to do to help make the relationship work? You have to first decide yes or no that you want to be with him. Next: why must your relationship with men be a romantic/sexual one? why can't you just remain friends with the other man while you search for someone who is worthy of you and who you have romantic/sexual feelings for? Just as someone you love can be all wrong for you, someone who looks good on paper for you can be wrong for you in reality. 2. If you have to learn to love someone then they aren't right for you. 3. If sex is important to either of you then yes, sex is important. What you will tolerate for the short term becomes unbearable for the long term. If you aren't attracted to your best friend then not only will you be looking at another failed love relationship but you risk destroying your friendship as well. my advice: decide if you really want to be with the man you love or not. If that answer is no then leave him and search out someone new to love. If you don't feel attracted to your best friend then don't pretend or mislead him, be very clear that he is only your friend and continue dating other people. if you once had romantic feelings for your best friend then it is possible to rekindle those. But if you truly feel no attraction to him at all, it may not be worth it to try. But whatever you do: complete your relationship with the other man before you move on to your next lover.

Cut down on the sexy outfits. You are probably destracting the guy.

Dress casual, put your hair up

Yes, its a common problem. Its hard to learn a new language although in an emersion environment, about 4 months should be enough for reasonable fluency.

A) English is the most complicated language for anyone who DOESN'T speak it to learn.

B) Frustration will do that.

I'm exactly how you can help him, it's mostly a time issue, it takes a long time.

Use it or lose it. He must abandon his mother tonge and use english every moment he has. Have him watch english tv, read english stuff. Evena alone, he must speak to himself in english.

Only then, he will pick it up.
