hey pancho! good question. coetzee wins this matchup of 2 flawed but powerful heavys. why? against dokes, gerrie jabbed & counterpunched well, showed a solid chin, defensive skills & stamina. if he fought this well consistently, he gives holmes a tough challenge. cooney waxed norton, but ken was in decline & never fared well vs the big punchers. cooney had the left, but it was the most telegraphed punch i ever saw, & he squared up before he launched it. both his right hand & his chin are suspect. he's taller, but no reach advantage. now, the fight. cooney starts fast & takes the first round. coetzee stoically blocks enough of the big lefts to survive. they trade evenly at the end of the round. both taste the others power. coetzee's corner tells him to flank cooneys power by moving to his left & throw straight right hands. coetzee does, & consequently catches cooney flush with the right in round 2. gerry gets up, but he is hurt. coetzee puts him down again with a combination. this time, the ref waves it off. coetzee wins by tko. thanks, pancho.

Wow.....2 big, lumbering white guys! I think Cooney has the edge in overall skills. I think that if Cooney survives the early rounds, he takes Coetzee out with that left hook in about the 7th round. With Coetzee, if you could take his punch, he became easy pickins' later in the fight, but he always had the "puncher's chance"

Coetzee - W 33 (KO's 21) TF 40 - W pct 83% - KO pct 53% - wins over L. Spinks, Dokes and Tillis - KO'ed by Weaver, Page and Bruno

Cooney - W 28 (KO's 24) TF 31 - W pct 90% - KO pct 77% - wins over Lyle, Young and Norton - KO'ed by Holmes, Spinks and Foreman

Both fighters were known as sluggers even tho' Coetzee KO pct wasn't as high as Cooney's. In this bout, I have Cooney winning by a KO in rd 6.

Not just because Coetzee is South African, I'm picking him. The night he stopped Dokes, he would've beaten any heavyweight on the planet.
