I am writing an essay in Spanish and one of the requirements is that I have to use the phrase: "tener muchas ganas de" plus an infinitive. yes, I do know what an infinitive is.
The explanation in the textbook says that it translates to "really feels like."
What are ganas???

As someone said, bottom line is that you are really wanting to do something or expecting something. You can't really translate it literally, word by word, because it's an idiom. "Ganas" in this case has nothing to do with the verb "ganar" and is only used in this context. So, I wouldn't really know how to translate "ganas" individually; craving? desires? . Let's put some examples;
-Tengo muchas ganas de volver a verte. I'm really looking forward to see you again.
- Tengo muchas ganas de llorar, pero no me salen las lágrimas. I really want to cry, but tears won't drop.
In singular, "gana", it's used in the in the idiom "dar la gana", which is a bit rude by the way. "Gana", again is hard to translate, perhaps, will? feeling?. Anyway, it's never used separately of this context.
- No me da la gana: I just don't want to.
- Lo haré cuando me dé la gana: I'll do it whenever I want to.

Ganas translates to desires, so it would refer to what you want to do, what you want to accomplish. "Tener muchas ganas" would be "To have a lot of desires."
I'm not a native Spanish speaker, so I could be wrong. I've taken several years of the language though (although it's been a while since I've had a class).

Tener muchas ganas means to feel very much to do something. Ganas means desire or inclination. Take your pick.

or really want to....
or I have alot of enthusiasm

"to really want to..." Tengo muchas ganas be besarte translates into "I really want to kiss you" Tengo muchas ganas de ir al cine: I really want to go to the movies. An infinitive is the "to" form of your verb. To eat, to play, to laugh etc. Good luck : Buena Suerte!

But figuratively "Be really willing to..."
Bottom line is that it means someone really wants to do something.

it means you wishor want to do something plus I feel it's similar to that phrase you use in English..

Tengo ganas de ir al cine = i feel like going to the movies.
Tengo ganas de comer pizza = I want to eat pizza/ i feel like having pizza...
tengo ganas de verte= i want to see you, i feel like seeing you
tengo ganas de estar contigo= i want to be with you....
