My dog Zoe had 2 beautiful puppies last Thursday. On Monday I took them to my friends (who works at a vet's office) she said she could doc there tails. So on Monday night after they closed the office I went over there so she could do it. I thought everything went ok, but when I got home to put the puppies down I checked to see if they were ok and I noticed that you could see the bone of one of the puppies. I don't know if he lost a stitch or if she didn't do it right. I don't know if I am over reacting or what. I asked my brother in-law and he says that it is normal. I don't know. It just doesn't feel right to me. I fell so bad I regret getting there tails done.

So can anybody tell me if this is normal????

She didn't do the surgery right.

What she did was also flat-out against the law....it's called practicing veterinary medicine without a license, and she can go to jail for it....whether she did it at the office or at her home. If she did it at the office, she can also be prosecuted for theft from her employer. (Even if she did it at her home, she likely stole the supplies and instruments from the clinic...because the DVM wouldn't have given or sold them to her.) You would be doing a huge favor to your veterinarian to explain what happened. How would you like it if you were paying someone to work for you, only to have them steal from you and no one tell you?

But the most important thing is that this is exactly what causes those ugly, scarred, and hairless tail tips you see on docked tails when the dogs are adults. It's from homemade crop-jobs, because people don't know what they're doing. The pups can also die from septicemia. If you don't hurry up and have it redone properly (by a licensed, practicing DVM) within 24 hours, you'll lose the opportunity to fix it.

P.S. Make your so-called "friend" (who KNEW what she was doing was illegal, btw) pay for it. It's going to cost more to fix it than if you'd had it done right in the first place. And find better friends.

If you'll notice, that article is almost 10 years old. Although some of it is good (in the way of explanation), it has some very outdated information.

I doubt you should be seeing the bone! One of my dobes had an ugly docking job on his tail when I got him, the skin and hair wasn't left long enough to cover or something - I see this all the time and that's probably what your brother in law is referring to. I had mine fixed when his ears were done. My other dogs I've gotten since then do not look like that - much nicer tails so I'm assuming it's a bad job and I would take them in for a recheck. The tail should be cut shorter than the skin so that it stretches over and tucks in nicely. that way it doesn't leave a bald tip on the tail at the very least.

Docking of the tail isn't severely painful to domestic canines and would evade common healthiness issues that reason greater discomfort and threat of an infection than the docking. Proponents even have self belief that docking executed incredibly much at cutting-edge after beginning ensures that the wound heals actual and actual, asserting that in spite of discomfort the technique motives is a helpful commerce-off. Docking to domestic canines fewer than 10 to fourteen days previous is without delay executed by utilising the two breeders and veterinarians without anesthesia. combatants of this technique state that maximum tail dockings are executed for cultured motives extremely than well being concerns and are unnecessarily painful for the dogs.

My sister had this same problem with one of her rottie pups and her vet said no, the bone should not be showing. That's just an open wound waiting for infection. She ended up taking the pups back in for recheck and sure enough, 2 pups needed restitched. Personally I do NOT see a point in docking tailing anyway. It's only for looks, serves no other purpose.

THAT IS NOT NORMAL. You need to get the dogs in to see another vet as soon as possible. That is an open wound. Open wounds are just asking for infection. Becuse the open wound is exposing a bone in the tail this also means that there is a hugely increased risk for infection to enter the spinal chord and cause serious problems, even death. Please, take the the puppies to a different vet as soon as possible.

No, you should not be able to see the bone if it was done correctly. Sounds like your friend needs to get in another line of work. What an idiot.

You can't do anything about the tails. You made the decision to "beautify" them to suit someone's idea of standards, and at least have the grace to feel bad about it. You've learned something, and I hope will at least treat these puppies much better. And, by the way, it does hurt like H---, so please make sure their nubs do not get bumped. It could take forever to heal if your "tech friend" screwed it up.

the bone should NOT be showing after tail docking , skin should have been pulled over bone and stiched together, take the pup to a reputable vet immediatly so it can be fixed . I am not against docking but it has to be done correctly and yours was obviously not.

If the pups were born thursday and the pups tails were docked monday that is way to late to wit to get their tails docked. And no it is not normal to see the bone. You should bring them to a vet so they dont get a painful infection. If you cant get them to a vet put iodine on their tails.

I think you should call a 24 hr Vet right away and ask. In the meantime, here's a pretty informative site:
