the SEALS because 100 X 30 round clip = 3000 rounds in 8 to 10 seconds verses 1000 arrows with a time of flight 3 to 5 seconds. variable would be SEALS firing from prone position against archers who must fire from standing or on one knee. Arrows miss and 80% casualty's on archers in first 3 to 5 seconds. also with that much ammo crossing each other at 100 yards collisions would occur and the bullet would deflect some arrows and vica verca.

If the archers are only armed with a bow and arrow and the SEALS only have a AR-15, which is the civilian semi-auto version in .223 I would have to go with the archers.

The M-16 and the AR-15 has a long history being a jam-o-matic. Which would leave the SEALS vulnerable, and then you have wonder if a .223 round would penetrate Roman armor, I'm not sure it would. So we are talking about every SEAL taking at least 10 head shots at a hundred yards.

While the archers won't have any concealment, and it is a SEAL specialty.

Now, if able to maneuver and had secondary, third fourth and fifth weapons (grenades, landmines, sidearm, and a knife) it would be no contest.

Another thing about the SEALS they are a hit and run guerrilla style unit, not front line infantry where they would have to slog it out. The way the SEALS fight would be a tough way to battle even a standard Roman Phalanx, because of the formation is what made it strong, even if a SEAL was armed with little more than Bowie knife (just to even up the match) The SEALS are not going to break through the Phalanx. Now if about ten SEALs were armed with either a Barret's .50 or two were armed with a Ma Deuce the SEALs would win against 1,000 archers and two whole Roman Legions.

gadda tip my hat to the seals also .. but a few variables are needed too .. assuming you mean these two groups on an open field with no cover for either side.
do seals get body armor ?? if so it's all over for the Romans. even the most skill archer has a hard time making a head shot at 100 feet, and even those might not kill, while one modern bullet will easily tear apart a body at that range.
slight accuracy advantage to seals.
rate of fire advantage to seals
moral advantage to seals ( the Romans would run, or break if they lost enough, while seals will fight keep fighting even if it's down to 1000 to 1 )
ability for seals to act on heir own, where as Romans follow strict orders from their commander, gives them a good advantage also, since they can switch tactic's faster.

not that Roman archer are all that bad, great in their day.. but new tech' calls for new fighting styles.

Interesting question. Technology vs. Numbers. I'd have to give it to the navy seals. I think even with limited amo, and although they'd sustain some casualties, i think they'd win. They wouldn't hesitate to take to the dirt, fire in short (possible one shot) bursts with accuracy, and (although it's kinda a cheap point) the sight of bows and arrows wouldn't cause them to crap there pants and run. However, the sound ,sight and result of machine guns on the Roman's ranks may have that exact effect. Now, 10 navy seals? Or perhaps even 100 regular ground infanctry.... let the games begin!

dude, a navy seal would kick ***.there might be 1000 archers but there would be at least 1 navy seal with a snipper riffle and 1 with a finger on a big red button.lol just thought id add that for good measures. GO NAVY SEALS.

The Romans may have many numbers, but the SEALS would win. The SEALS have better weapons and training.

id have to go with the seals on this one too. even 100 modern infantry soldiers would win against 1000 roman soldiers armed with bow and arrow. because soldiers also carry tear gas and gas masks. ive never heard of romans having any gas masks. and as soon as that gas hits their system they are as useless as can be.

nicely, the seals would probable flank the hell out of em and shoot maximum of em contained in the back. the idea-about american forces scuffling with hostile to others makes me flinch in spite of the actuality that. i'm not putting forward if both aspect would win, because i do not want that to ever ensue. Is the section vegetated? if so, the seals would conceal contained in the flora and %. them off. The seals would have numerous kills with one shot if the military infantrymen had no body armor. wish this helped!
