Canada should not buy anything from the United States. They need to buy their planes from the British. Much better aircraft.

I'm with rhSaunder on this one. Building a war plane is hugely expensive and is far more likely to land you with a "white elephant" than a usable machine. We could do it, but why? If you buy off a larger production run you're going to get a more dependable machine and have more money in the end to keep it running. That's what's really important. We need these machines to keep credible with our allies and show we're ready to contribute. If we make their planes cheaper by buying some as well and sharing resources to maintain them, we keeping in good faith. That doesn't mean we have to buy from the Americans. The Brits, the Krauts, and yes, even the French are our allies too. Canada should just make sure it makes the best effort it can without letting pride get in the way.

PS: Somebody is going to bring up the Arrow as evidence of a pro Canadian technology argument. I'd respond with a comparison of the Ross Rifle versus the Lee-Enfield. Sure, there's a big difference between a rifle and a jet, but you know the principle is the same. Ross and Hughes were convinced their rifle was better and in many ways it was. That didn't stop a lot of men from dying in Flanders. Think about it.

No. Developing warplanes of good capability is an unbelievably expensive proposition, and it makes a lot more sense to buy good hardware from somebody who has already footed those costs than to try to do it oneself. Only if a plausible case could be made that Canada could build aircraft better/cheaper than to buy them should it build them, and that is a dubious proposition indeed -- not because of any particular vice with Canada, which can (and does) build perfectly good airplanes, but simply because the high tech stuff is so costly.

I don't think so. Why reinvent the wheel? If we had to mobilze for war, and our alies could/would not provide us with equipment, we could probobly convert other facilities to produce "war" planes fairly quickly. Or just as likely, we'd employ other, cheaper, faster technologies. Perhaps some form of grown at home guided missile for long range capability, and certainly some form of mass produced anti aircraft missile to repel enemy aircraft. In some ways, modern war planes are mostly symbolic, kind of like a pissing contest. They basically take over the enemy airspace, then can **** bombs at will. The ends can be acheived in other ways now.

Stop buying planes period. You don't have to build them, Canada rarely gets involved in war. You ally yourselves even though you don't start war, but if I was Canada, I would take that money and put it elsewhere.

that is an absurd question - both international locations are dependant. Howvever, maximum Canadians would want to imagine the country is dependant on us, which to some factor they are. although, seeing as how 80% of our commerce (that is bilateral - there is no 'leeching' in contact) is with the country. i'd also want to make a remark to each and each and every of the Canadians - stop with the raging anti-Americanism, it fairly is sickening. i will comprehend being discontented through the country, yet to bypass on bigoted rants about the U. S., you're not any better than the egghead who forumlated this question. Oh, Michael S. - Harper didnt despatched our troops to Afghanistan, the Chretien Liberals did.
