The Nikon D40 was only officially announced this week. It's not available yet. You can't even pre-order it at most places.
Also, the jump from the D40 (a very basic model) to the D80 (a serious camera) is enormous - there are 2 in between models: the D50, and the recently discontinued D70s.
Anyway, here's a preview of the D40: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond40/
and a full review of the D80: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond80/
Check those out for the specs, and to see which one fits your shooting style more.

The difference between the D40 and the D80 is huge. If you are looking for a more professional edge i'd say the D80 because you can do a lot more with it than the D40. The D 40 has only just come out so I would give it some time and read reviews about it. It also depends what you are after and how much you are willing to spend. If I had to decide i'd say the D80 as you know that you are getting a lot more and if money is not a hold back this is the one for you.
I hope that this helped.
