Is it psychological? Are they ashamed of being poor, or are they just too ignorant to manage money properly? I work at a grocery store and I see people with EBT buy steak, bulk candy, and expensive soda then pull out their RAZRs.

Whoa whoa, i didn't mean for this question to come off as everyone who uses EBT. I see many people who look like they really need it, they talk about their work and how they are thankful for the bridge card. And people with disabilities deserve help too. I'm only talking about the younger people who have the fancy stuff and piercings and jewelry (last time i checked "chains" weren't free), i hear them complain how the government is so cheap and how their card never works right etc etc...

You are very much on point. You tend to notice that those with money do not necessarily flaunt as much as those who have less. Think of the concept of Noveau Riche where people with "new money" tend to be flashier than those who grew up with money. Or the whole idea that those in middle and lower class incomes tend to make around the same amount annually, it is just how they spend it which determines which class they fall into...

Do you also notice the people in wheel chairs, and using walkers or other disability equipment? Do you notice they don't seem to have what they need? Do you notice the disabilities that you can't see, like PTSD from life threatening events, such as combat, domestic violence, sexual assault?
If you do would you please stop focusing on the very few people that actually manage to cheat the system by using food stamps? What happens is the many that actually NEED the help, lose their benefits b/c so many are afraid that one or two ineligibles may get them.
You should know that they will be caught, tis only a matter of time. There are MANY checks and balance systems in the food stamp program, which costs a lot more money in bureaucratic salary compensations than if they just fed the hungry in the first place.
And don't judge the car they are driving. I know many people on assistance that BORROW cars to get to the store, or have to have someone else drive them. As I have done on many occasions.
Also, many social workers do the shopping for the infirmed or disabled, so perhaps they are also in the numbers you are seeing.
Please, let people eat!! Sure a few gluttons will hog some portions, but many don't even have enough.
Peace.

I see the same thing in North Carolina. I too am a college educated professional and get absolutely disgusted at the way things are. I feel like I bust my butt to make ends meet and get by so that others can use my tax dollars to get everything they WANT- notice I didn't say need. I know there are people out there that really do need the system to help them out some time, but I think states should do a better job tracking these people and limiting their time on welfare. Anyone could find themselves in that situation, I just feel like if I were to need it, they would tell me NO.

I understand what you are saying I have seen that too. BUT not all people are like that. I know disabled, & elderly people that get food stamps that drive 20+yr old beaters & make there food stamps stretch. I dont see nothing wrong with them getting a treat once in a while

This is hardly a revelation.
This has been going on ever since food stamps came out.

If the opportunity is out there to get something much cheaper, wouldn't you swallow your pride and take it, so you could use your money for other things, like your own cell phone?

Sadly it appears that they have learned how to work the system. The good news is that you have (temporarily) a union job..(soon to be extinct if we keep voting Republican). So enjoy your good pay and benefits while they last, and when they are gone you will know how to get the free stuff.

lol, I think it's probably that it's just fun to eat good, especially if it's not your hard earned money you're paying for the food with.
