I have a German Shepherd dog that has seasonal allergies and food allergies. I feed him a raw diet most of the times but when I get lazy I feed Solid Gold Holistic Blend. It is available all over the country, here in Illinois I buy it at pet supplies plus. Some more good foods for dogs with allergies are Natural Balance Potato and Duck formula, Canidae, and Wellness. These are sold in most pet supply stores . Basically you need to stay away from foods that have corn, soy, wheat, eggs and beef these are top allergy problem foods. Go with a food that has duck or venison and try to find holistic dog foods. They are a little more expensive when buying but overall they tend to be cheaper in the long run because you feed less. I hope this helps.

I have three dogs and two of them have special needs. One has allergies to Lamb and the other had two bouts with Pancreatitis from rawhide bones. Foods she was eating at the time, after recovering from the Pancreatitis made her throw up, like Nutro because the kibble is very hard. They like Authority Oven Baked made by PetSmart and it was a good food but they didn't have wild game brands which my pit mix tolerates well. She doesn't take to Lamb. The result, we feed them all Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice brand dog food. I also get them Pet Botanics "Lamb log" that I give to the two and "Beef Log" that I give to the pit. I'll slice a piece about an inch and a half thick and cube it and add it to her food. Same with the Lamb Log for the other two. They LOVE LOVE LOVE this. Also, I sometimes add a few tablespoons of pumpkin pie filling and a tablespoon of cottage cheese for variety.
Sometimes you have to try some different things out to see what your dog is allergic to and what she or he tolerates well. Avoid foods with fillers, artificial coloring, toxic preservatives etc. Nature's Recipe does not have those bad things.

Without a doubt Wellness brand dog food. My dog is allergic to a TON of stuff, and Wellness Simple Solutions Venison Formula is the ONLY thing I have found that she does great on. It's also a much better qualtiy than Hill's(science diet). Try the venison formula, I know it's expensive, but they really don't need to eat a lot of it since it doesn't have all the fillers in it. You may want to try/look into Innova EVO. My pooch is doing great on wellness; while she was on Hill's her hair began falling out (one of the symptons of her allergies). Now that she's on wellness she has a full shiney coat and is looking great. We go down to the dog park on a regular basis and people there can't believe the difference in her coat now that we've found something that she isn't allergic to. The good thing about the wellness simple solutions is that it only has one protien and one carbohydrate source (venison and brown rice); whereas the hill's has a LOT more ingredients, so more likely to contain some type of allergen. Hope this helps!

Adding one more thing, most vets really don't know anything about dogfoods and brands, they recommend what they sell in their office (and usually that's science diet, which isn't a high quality food). A lof of them have no idea about premium dog foods and what is available. Your best bet is to switch to something like the Wellness Simple Solutions (don't try the other formulas until you have a handle on the allergy situation). Cut out all treats until you figure out what your dog is allergic to. Once you have a decent list of allergens you can start incorporating different treats or food, but do this slowly and only try 1 new thing at a time, so if your dog reacts, you know what it's reacting to. My dog can only have Old Mother Hubbard treats along with pig ears and pig bones b/c she's allergic to all poultry and beef, along with wheat, corn and soy. I also don't recommend an allergy test by the vet b/c it doesn't cover all the possibilities and it isn't garaunteed that your dog will react to something you know it is allergic to. For example, Bill Jac makes liver treats, now when my dog gets on, she breaks out in hives on her neck. However if she gets something with chicken it is she's fine, unless she gets it on a regular basis, then she starts getting pimples and her hair falls out.

You can find Wellness at feed stores and independent pet stores, also look at Innova, Solid Gold, and Canidae.

Well Misti, same thing with my German Shepard, My Austrailain Shepard, and My Rotweiler....All Three Allergic, All to the same thing is what my vet said, chances are your case is just some basic K9 allergies, Most Vet clinics sell the food, all you have to do is take your furry little friend into the clinic, explain the symptoms, possibly an ingrediant list and type of food your feeding him, Cheaper Foods, often contain ingrediants to cause an allergic reaction to dogs, something unnaturally scented...Dogs hate it, cologne, and perfume tend to really set em off...Lol, Like I said Go to the vets office, I am waring you now though, you are going to end up forking over a little bit more than you were in food for your dog than before, Best Of Luck, and regards to your dog!

My dog was allergic to CORN. Many dogs are allergic to it and it's almost all of the store brand dog foods. Try to find a good quality food that is made up of lamb and rice or chicken and rice. Avoid products with wheat or corn.

I totally agree with the answerers who suggested natural diets (Solid Gold, Wellness, Canidae, etc.) with single source proteins that are not chicken, turkey, beef, etc. My dog has dog extremely well on Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice. You can buy it at Petco and Pet Supplies Plus. I tried the prescription diets and this food by far has worked much better than any of them. It's also free of by products and preserved naturally.

Good luck!

your vet will carry a variety of prescription foods based on the types of health problems that dogs experience. Chances are it'll be a Science Diet product. They're a bit expensive but excellent quality and great for the critters

You need to find out what he is allergic to and then buy the food without whatever he is allergic to. See your vet.
