I just got back a copy of a background check my employer performed. Under my former addresses there's two addresses listed (in places I've never lived) with other people's names. The form explains that there are inaccuracies, but I'm wondering - how does this happen? Who are these people? Did their social security number get misentered, or maybe they're trying to steal mine?
I checked my credit report with all three major companies and there's nothing odd on any of my reports, and there hasn't been in the past.

absolutely call the credit bureaus and tell them the situation. Now it could have been a clerical error, i.e. someone applied for a credit card and a person at the credit bureau inputted the wrong number by accident. But it it's multiple names there is a good possibility that you number is being passed around to illegal aliens. The government doesn't inform an employer if they send in a w-2 with stolen number. They just take the money paid into SS and put it in a "slush" fund, you will never see it (stinks huh). I work for a company and see this all day. We tell our clients to inform the person so they can take care of it and not ruin their credit. We actually had one guy who had 15 names associated with his number

If I were you, I would contact all three credit reporting agencies immediately and let them know what happened. They can flag your ssn, and put on there that someone else may be trying to use your ssn. It may have been a mistake, transposition of numbers, but I wouldn't take any chances. If those people are trying to steal your identity, it is hell to clean up if they go crazy with some credit cards or something.

My first suspension would be illegal aliens using a number picked at random for a fake I.D. and your number was what got used.
