I am currentley a Sophmore at Upland High School. I play the Bass Clarinet and the Bagpipes in the school marching band. My section in nthe band has decided that we don't use neck straps for the Bass Clarinets. I have gone through 2 years of marching band without a neck strap so now it is more of just an annoyance than help. Everyone we talk to says it is bad for your thumb to have all that weight on it. is that true?

If you can't find a way to comfortably balance the weight, then yes...it's probably bad for your muscles and joints in your
thumb/hand....

You would really need to consult a medical specialist or a full-time Bass Clarinet instructor who should know the best. Though you might just start by asking your band leader.

One would assume that if this is common practice around the country, that it would be considered safe. On the other hand, the less pressure on any small body parts the better. There are some shoulder straps available vs. neck straps.

I would think that it would be very uncomfortable to march with a bass clarinet and not use a neck strap. Most peoples thumbs wouldn't be able to take that kind of abuse. I guess you get used to it though.
