My old boss was Jewish. But his race is Israeli. I've found some info and pasted it below. It should be more helpful than some other postings/comments.
religious identity?
Being Jewish is not a race
Being Jewish is not a race because Jews do not share one common ancestry or biological distinction. People of many different races have become Jewish people over the years.
Being Jewish is not a nationality
Being Jewish is not a nationality because Jews have been dispersed throughout the world for almost two thousand years. People of many different nationalities are Jewish.
Being Jewish is like being a citizen of a religious movement
Being Jewish means you are a part of a religious movement. However, the great majority of Jews become a part of the religious movement through birth and not due to their beliefs or actions. In this way, being Jewish is like being a citizen of a religious movement.
A Jewish identity is automatically bestowed on the babies of Jewish mothers (according to Orthodox and Conservative Judaism) and of Jewish mothers or fathers (according to Reform Judaism).
Jewish nationality
This Jewish identity stays with them throughout life even if they don't actively practice Judaism.
If a person is not born Jewish, he/she can undergo the process of conversion to become a Jew. A person who was not born Jewish or has not gone through the conversion process is not considered a Jew even if he or she believes in Judaism and observes Jewish practices. The conversion process is very meaningful because it is the only way for a non-Jew to become Jewish.

Wow some people type some extremely long answers. The truth is, Watchman has his facts in line...the easy answer is, yes at one time there may have been a "true" strong Jewish bloodline, but after thousands of years of Intermarriage (as was pointed out) with the Jews moving around from nation to nation and interbreeding within each, we are now left with a group of people who live in Israel calling themselves Jews, who are no more ethnically Jewish than I am. For comparison my ancestors from generations ago were Irish and Spanish, yet I wouldnt refer to myself as either Spanish or Irish, or Spanish-Irish-American....and this is only after a few generations....we have a similar problem with people referring to themselves as "African-American" who are no more African than I am. "Jewish" folks cannot claim a Jewish heritage, in conclusion, merely an alignment of traditional Jewish belief systems.

It is .you are a Jew when you say you are .Where were you born? Its not that complicated the tribal Jew existed along time ago the intellect of man has created the current situation or Jewish experience (excuses if you will) keep it simple God gave us brains to use ,use them.If you prefer the fatherland over the father. You probably don't need to be a Jew.I don't believe there was a greater quote in modern times.Religion is the opiate of the masses.Chairman Mao Tze Dong. Religion is for people that don't want to go to hell spirituality is for people who have already been there.

There has ever been and will always be only one race - the human race. Different cultures, yes. Different ethnic groups, yes. Different this or that, yes.
Different race, no. Never was and never will be.
"O CHILDREN OF MEN! Know ye not why We created you all from the same dust? That no one should exalt himself over the other. Ponder at all times in your hearts how ye were created. Since We have created you all from one same substance it is incumbent on you to be even as one soul, to walk with the same feet, eat with the same mouth and dwell in the same land, that from your inmost being, by your deeds and actions, the signs of oneness and the essence of detachment may be made manifest. Such is My counsel to you, O concourse of light! Heed ye this counsel that ye may obtain the fruit of holiness from the tree of wondrous glory."

Yes, the Jews supposedly descended from Isaac, one of Abraham's sons. His descendents travelled and absorbed culture. One day, Moses implemented the religious aspect of being Jewish. Most of what Jews do, though, is just their race's culture.

Nope, it's a religion. Those who say it is or was a race they have NO idea what they're talking about. For Watchman: dude the question is a 4 words question... what the hell did you need to write an essay for?

Yes. I've always thought Jewish and Israeli were interchangable now that Israel is now, unfortunately, a country.
