If your dog is young, he may be cutting teeth. Dogs also chew things to sharpen and clean their teeth and keep their gums strong. Rawhide chews or greenies can help with this. However, dogs also chew things when they feel ignored or bored. I had a dog who nearly ate the wall in my kitchen while I was at work. He started chewing on the corner and kept going.
Play with the dog, get him something to chew on that is good for him. Praise him for chewing the right thing, take away the wrong items and try to play with him more.

dogs chew because they're a) anxious, b) have too much energy and c) because they're bored.

if your dog is chewing on things, it probably isnt getting enough attention, exercise, or stimulation.

I guarantee if you walk your dog twice a day for a half an hour, play ball when you get home for 1/2 hour, and give it lots of good loves before bedtime that you'll see a reduction in chewing.

A tired dog is a good dog.

Pick everything up off the floor, and get your dog some interesting toys. A rawhide bone is ok for limited times - but do not leave a rawhide with a dog for a long period of unsupervised time. Also, a KONG is really good - you can use a knife to slip peanut butter in the center, and they have to really work at getting it out again.

Finally, there are puzzle balls that you can fill with kibble - the more the dog plays with it and discovers how to roll it around, the more it gets in kibble. Exercise, focused energy, and a treat!

Well, Hannah, you don't say how old your dog is - if he/she is young, then it's teething time (which lasts quite a while for dogs). If no longer a pup, then it's just that your friend is a dog, and dogs chew - they chew to relieve boredom, or stress, or just because it feels good.

So what you do is you make sure your dog has lots of appropriate, approved things to chew (if s/he will chew on a Nylabone, those are great - last forever - although some dogs won't touch 'em), and doesn't have easy access to things you don't want chewed (like shoes - NEVER give a dog old shoes to chew as a toy. Your dog doesn't know old shoe from new shoe - it just teaches her/him to chew shoes in general).

Spraying things you don't want chewed with products like Bitter Apple Spray (available at pet stores - test on fabrics to be sure it won't stain, it usually doesn't) discourages chewing on things you don't want chewed.

Next, you need a "no" can - a few pennies in a soda can with the hole on top taped over. When you find your dog chewing something you don't want chewed, shake the can, say "No!," take away the thing you don't want chewed, and replace with something that's okay, like a dog toy.

Finally, you make sure your dog is getting enough exercise - playing in the back yard, going for a walk - and you start obedience training (teaching "sit," "stay," etc.). There are good (positive reinforcement only - no choke chains!) classes and videos available to teach you how to teach your dog - which teaches your dog proper behavior and sets you up, in a positive, healthy way, as Pack Leader.

Good luck!

Buy a product called bitter apple. You spray it on what you don't want the puppy to chew.

Also, use a distraction technique. Use a pop can with some beads or something small in it, so it will rattle.
When your puppy chews something, give the can a shake and tell the puppy no, then substitute an acceptable toy for it to chew.

One thing that works great for anything wood in your house such as tables and chairs, rub some tobasco sauce on a paper towel or dishrag and wipe down the legs of all treated wood. Bare wood will absorb it so I wouldn't suggest that. The dog will not go for the wood more than once! My puppy learned very fast after I did this.

I would NOT suggest flicking or hitting the dog!!! Doing this will only have one of two consequences - your dog will become aggressive from being hit or it will become very shy and nervous. Neither are good. Abuse is never the answer, only proper training!

why , dont you buy youre dog some dogs toys that he like to chew on like a toys or a big meat bone instead having youre keep chewing everything else around you. if you dog had chewed on youre shoes ,ect i would just put them away so youre dog wouldnt able reach them . there is a place where you can get your dog trainning at the pet market . they have a class program where they help the owners to train their pets .

Buy your dog some raw-hide toys to chew on. Most dogs love them. They come in all sizes, and i heard that they are good for the dogs teeth and gums. Dogs seem to enjoy chewing on raw hide / among other things. It seems to be nature at work. Dog bones are cheaper than furniture and other odds and ends.

Cayenne pepper sprinkled on the area it keeps chewing is something that has worked on my dogs. I've heard of something you can buy at the pet store called "Bitter Apple", and there are other things that supposedly taste awful to them. Just be sure what you use won't ruin the type of surface you will be treating!
Get it a 'treat ball' that you fill with dog food bits, & it has to spend time & energy working to get its dinner out, in order to eat it. Make sure it has things to do that require both energy & use of the brain. Boredom causes bad habits in pets! Best wishes for success in training your dog to stop chewing!

All dogs like to chew. Try filling a hollow bone with peanutbutter then freeze. It will keep it busy for hours. Do a few so they are alway on hand.
