many people say it's legal, and many people say it's not. what if i am just using it for myself, and not "sharing" it with other computers? if it's not legal, then why does the government keep it running?

Of course not. None of the P2P programs are illegal. but the sharing of software, new movies, and music is illegal if the owners of the copyrights haven't authorized free mass distribution. As defined in Canada, it is not illegal to download a song, it is illegal to allow it to be uploaded. Other countries, especially the US, have different interpretations.

Yes, this is illegal.. Sharing audio, whether or not for personal use, is taking away from the artist's livelihood as they earn income from royalties and monies from recording companies based upon sales volumes of their CD's. The Government doesn't control private entities such as Limewire, no more than they can control Coca Cola or Microsoft.

Limewire as a program is not illegal. Downloading a file with a copyright is illegal.. It stops so many people from downloading it. LOL

Limewire is not breaking the law, the people who use it are. Think of the users as the crack dealers & limewire as the corner they do buisness on.

no, its not illegal, because they have a free AND a paying version. They get away with it because they offer faster downloads and more with the paying version. I use the free limewire with a highspeed connection, and i LOVE it. Watch out for spyware, though

the softwear itself is not because it is just meant for file sharing. but when copyrighted audio is transfered, you are committing the crime. thats how limewire can still be downloaded

its not legal. that is taking ripped copies of artists' work and making it available to anyone to download and no one gets any money if that happens. even if its just for yourself, you arent paying the artist or record company money for it, you cant have it.
