My grandfather, an immigrant from the Ukraine, customarily poked a hole in a fresh egg and sucked out the contents. Who has done or witnessed this in person?

alvinipry: He didn't though. Unfortunately, he died in an automobile accident at age 67 when the life expectancy was 49 years of age.
Also, how about the idea that we should wash any fruits or vegetables before eating them; apparently a useless gesture since we are told that washing our hands for 30 seconds with hot water and disinfectant soap is the only way to be assured that we are cleaning them! How ya' gonna' do that with vegetables and fruits??? We are paranoid, aren' we???

I've always done that, as long as the egg is fresh, there's nothing wrong with that. We always do that in the Philippines especially if the egg is from a native chicken and was'nt feed with commercial feeds and egg laying mass.

I've seen it, I prefer to eat my raw eggs disguised as something else, though, like Orange Julius (the original Orange Julius chain made them with raw eggs--they just don't taste the same anymore!).

"Ukranian Eggs" are eggs that have a small hole poked in each end, the contents removed (my mom always did it by blowing out the egg rather than sucking it), and are then highly decorated with beautiful designs. Perhaps that is why they started decorating them that way--after sucking the contents out they were left with whole egg shells that can last forever. Much better than regular Easter eggs that only last a couple days and can't be left out of the fridge for long! :)

As a side note, there is NOTHING wrong with eating clean raw eggs and you won't get sick from it.

I have done this to make Easter Eggs. My girlfriends Mom was from the Ukraine and when I was a kid she taught us..... but you have to poke holes top and bottom. You blow on one end and the egg comes out the bottom. You do not suck it because you will get really sick eating raw egg or getting it in your mouth.

Have done it many times, mostly to make christmas decorations out of the empty shell. Never consumed the contents though, eggs gross me out!

VOMIT VOMIT. That is superbly unhygenic. What if there is bird flu in the egg your grandad would be umm... never mind.
