If you used semi permanent color - many shampoos will lighten the color. Adding some highlights will soften the difference.

See a pro.

If your hair is dyed, the only thing that will lift the colour out is bleach unfortunately. You can try using what is called a hi lift tint, however it might come out orange on the roots and not lift the ends at all.
If it is the damage that you are worried about, you can use a low peroxide, which will take longer to lift, but not damage your hair. Also remember to use a good protein treatment on your hair after such as L'anza Trauma Treatment and use a heat protecter when you use heat on it.
Bleach is always illuded as being damaging to your hair, I'll admit my hair is not in great condition from bleach, but after extensive treatments and 5 years of bleaching, browning, redding, bleaching etc... it still doesnt look aft bad!

Hope this helps :)

Contrary to one of the other answers you received here, color will not lift color enough to get you where you want to be. You did not mention the type of color you have on your hair. What you have on your hair already will determine what you need to do to lighten it. Email me some details and I'll tell you what you need to do. And by the way, any color that lifts (makes your hair lighter) has developer (peroxide). Some products just use lower volumes than others. You definitely won't get 3 levels of lift with no peroxide. Your best bet is to go to a professional for a consultation before you make any big decisions about changing your hair color again. Most salons don't charge for this service so it's worth it to talk to someone in person who can look at your hair. Good luck.

Some of these answers are almost spot on, others are rubbish! Me and my best mate had the long process job of bringing her hair from black (she went through a gothy stage) back to her natural blonde colour. We are both trained hair stylists. First i used a colour stripper (please get this done at a salon) to remove as much of the colour as possible, then put a high lift tint with a bit of bleach in to give it a kick. It doesnt lift as light as bleach, but doesnt knacker it so much either. Also, as we were leaving the underneath dark, it would have been too much of a contrast. I put a few lowlites through the underneath (as its very patchy when stripped) We carried on like this for a few months. But let the underneath grow out. She now has her gorgeous light blonde colour back, and as the underneath was left to grow, we could then bleach it up without the risk of it snapping so we could dye it pink. Oh and the tip about dying a warm colour like red....ignore!!!!!! That will only drag the whole process out as red is worse to get out the hair than black!!!!!

back in the fifties when hair styles first began, in the back streets of manchester plaster our hair down we used margerine, or best butter at weekends till we left school and started earning. In the hot summer the butter and the sun would bleach your hair, and make it very light well, brown hair anyway and it looked natural because no dies were used, but wrong time of the year for the sun.this was back in the teddyboy era.

No over-the-counter products will lift your hair to the color you want. Instead of a nice platinum blonde look, your hair will fry and turn red. I suggest going to a good salon, and ask them for a bleaching treatment WITH toner. This will give you a nice, sheer blonde without damaging your hair in anyway.

Better to go to a professional hairdresser, things can go very wrong when you try to lighten your hair at home ie ginger! Trust be I have been there, it's not worth it and damages the condition of your hair.

a soapcap might help - its a diluted version of bleach so it should do less harm than using normal bleach on your hair.
SoapCap info can be found at the bottom of the page
