Ask at the bridal shops in your area if they have a seamstress who does custom work or if they can recommend one. Or advertise in the local paper. You could also ask at any sewing/fabric stores around there.

Good luck. Before hiring anyone, make sure you see samples of their actual work so you can make sure they have the skill to make what you want.

Some of the department stores or men's suit stores have people that have been tailors for years. Call & talk to them, tell them what you are looking for. They should be able to refer you to someone.
Ask around, too. Only use a seamstress that comes reccomended.
Ask to see some of her work. And make sure it 's a smoke-free environment. You don't want to walk up the aisle smelling like a bowling alley.

Sometimes having the dress made, you can get the dress you want cheaper than you can from one of the store. And the bridal stores don't ever tell you that if you find a dress you like but it's too expensive, they can get it in a cheaper fabric saving you money. Satin works as well as silk in alot of cases.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say, "Yeah the wedding was great but did you feel the material the wedding gown was made of".
Go for it. Good luck.

Wedding dresses are tricky things...if you found one that you really like chances are you'll have to order it a size or 2 bigger than what you usually wear and the seamstress at teh bridal shop will fix it to fit perfectly. Most brides have 3 fittings to ensure the dress is teh proper size.

If you want to have a dress made, ask the bridal shop for referrals. Chances are they have a ton of people walking through their doors with ample experience and great products. Just know that having a dress specially made with cost you a fortune. Good luck!

Try your local community college. They usually have sewing classes. If you have a local college, try there also. A degree from a university requires a large project for graduation. It is usually a tux or formal gown. There may be someone there that needs a final project - that's your best bet because they need a good grade and probably won't charge you all that much. Check with your local costume stores as well. A lot of them have seamstresses that sew costumes - any high-end costume maker would be a good bet. It's not going to be cheap, though... Good luck, sweetie!

Most wedding dresses have to be altered to fit. order the closest size and go from there. Look in the phone book to find a seemstress. They charge around $30.00 an hour if one were to make a dress for you it would cost a fortune.

The wedding shop you are buying the dress from should have some reccomendations. If not, ask friends or go to the yellow pages.
