in august my husband and i moved in with my parents to save for a downpayment on a house. (our goal is to be out by next august) we needed to pay some of our bills down/off so my parents won't let us pay them rent--we clean the house, do yard work at our house and my grandma's...my husband is tutoring my dad in math for a class he's taking---so we earn our room and board. do you think it would be a nice gesture to get them a gift card for the grocery store for christmas? if so for how much? if not---any other ideas?

If they won't let you pay them rent then I'm sure they wouldn't want you to spend a lot on any kind of gift. I agree that a dinner out would be nice.. or tickets to a show if there are any in your area... but maybe going out of your way to have dinner waiting for them (a special one that you make yourself complete with flowers and nice tablecloth etc.) would show more of a personal touch.
Sometimes the most valued gift is a letter to each expressing your heartfelt thanks and love... telling them what they mean to you. Why not do this along with a personal dinner (don't forget the candles) that you take hours to create?

I would wait until you are just about moved into your new house then do the grocery gift card about $50 if you can, so the can stock their favorite foods in the cabinets and no one will raid it.
As for Christmas I would go for buying them something special and affordible as a nice movie they can enjoy over and over at home or a nice bedspread (personalized) or just pick from your heart.
Good Luck!!!

No, I don't think that's a good Christmas gift for parents. I think you should get them something that says, we really appreciate you and something that can be for just the two of them alone. I think the restaurant gift certificate is a good idea, but I would add something like a movie pass also.

I agree with the other answers here. You could get them a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant in town and a movie or play that they would enjoy.

That might be something more exciting and different than grocery money.

No~ parents hate that! (trust me I have tried that and my mother was pissed! Get them something else, like a gift certificate for dinner and a movie or something!

to be honest with you, no. itd be like your husband getting you a vacuum for your birthday (insensitive, but trying to be nice) i suggest you get them a reservation to a nice dinner out for the two of them, or something along those lines they could do together.
