My nephew will soon be leaving for Afghanistan. I would like to be able to send him some stuff, but I am not sure what is the best thing to send him. If anyone has some good ideas, please let me know.

When I was in the military I liked recieving stuff that I took for granted here in the states. Stuff like canned weenies, tuna, lil' baby shrimps. I loved Sports Illustrated, newspapers of your local area. I loved smoked almonds and peanuts. Stationary, pens, envelopes, stamps. Rice Crispie treats (wrap'em good), sardines, trinkets. Cheap digital watches from Wal-mart (the kind that light up at night), cigs., small radio & batteries. Try to keep it to stuff that will keep and won't get crushed or destroyed to bad when shipping. Hope this helps.

My son is in Iraq all year and I have been sending stuff USPS in the flat rate shipping boxes (stuffed full) for $8.10.
Here are some of the things:
Jerky
Gum
Candy (no chocolate it melts)
Magazines (Hot Rod, Cars, sports)
Puzzles
Crossword and word search puzzles
Books (all kinds)
trail mix
Gummy worms and jelly bellys
cards and dice
razor
toiletries (any)
paper and pens
stationary
joke books

This is some and I told my son anything he did not want or when he was done reading pass it along to the other soldiers. It is great when the stuff gets around. Have fun with it.

Send things that remind him of home. You can send chocolate BUT it needs to be the M&M's as they don't melt in the heat. I know other chocolates did well in Winter. Also, put everything in baggies....this way, if something breaks or tears, then other things won't get ruined. Another thing, when sending things..try not to send food items with toiletries....* toothpaste and deoderant and such *... You can get the One Rate Package or Flat Rate Box and pack it as full as possible for one Mailing Rate. You get these at the PO. You can go to http://www.usps.com/ and get items for free. Or you can go to your local PO and tell them you are sending things Downrange.

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me..
